Sennheiser HD 558 vs. the HD 598 - Page 6

Just curious wether these headphones need an amp like a pair of K702's would to bring out the full sound?
I'm thinking of picking up the usual Modi/Magni Schiit stack if so

They do well unamped but they shine amped. The Modi/Magni stack is perfect for them. Even after 5 years, I still love mine to bits. Amazing headphones.

However, an amp should make them sound slightly better.

Last night I experimented with the gain on my Little Dot III amp and discovered the maximum setting produced better bass and smoother highs on my 558's.

Okay, I wasn't sure if they required an amp or not like many headphones do

Good thing amping fixes the Bass, I thought the bass on the 558's and 598's was pretty so-so upon initial impression,

That seems to be the most peoples criticism of them for an otherwise sweet pair of headphones

The same is true with the 558 s. I use the Aune T1 with mine. They are good w/o dac/amp but outstanding with.

The HD 558 will not sound like the 598 when you mod it.

The HD 558 has a richer warmer sound than the 598, with more bass.

The HD 598 has a more refined sound with a treble tilt and lighter bass.

The HD 598 bass gets better with a good amp. I like both headphones, but lean slightly toward the 598

I wish you posted this a week ago.
 :)

While I like the HD558 like most people here with all equipment I'm wondering how much better can the sound get.

Unfortunately I was unable to listen to the HD line with the same source in one room.

Can you describe how the 598's outshine the 558's?

If you say instruments are clearer and stand out better... i"ll kill myself.

they're both excellent headphones, especially for the money. I gave my HD 558s away, so I don't have them on hand to compare. I just remember that the HD 598 had sharper resolution by a little bit. But some would say it's more of a step sideways than a step up. It's really not that huge of a difference to my ears. I think a fair number of people might prefer the warm sound of the 558. sometimes I miss the 558 and think about getting them back. but then remember that I also have the 600.

Thanks Potter.

Considering I got the 558 for a lot less than what the 598's are going for I don't feel so bad now.

I actually prefer the 558 modded over the 598 due to the sound being richer despite being slightly less refined.

streetdragon, I agree, I miss the richness and warmth of the 558 when I listen to the 598. The 598 can sound a tad too bright on some amps as well, while the 558 has no such issue. I still love both headphones though.

Great to hear but I'm wondering what you guys mean by "less refined"?

I hope it doesn't mean instruments can be better identified as I'm a musician so I always listen critically.

When I use the expression "refined," I'm saying that the headphone sounds higher fidelity, clearer, sharper resolution, sounds a tad more expensive. Hope that helps

DAMN!..that's what I feared.

So the 558's are NOT the same as the 598's when modded. :(

I thought that since they share the same speakers (and graph) that it was mainly a cosmetic difference.

I compared the 558's last night to my AKG 601's and the AKG's sounded a lot more "refined" to me.

Thanks for your input, PP.

I think a lot of people mistake refined for brighter.

Both the 558 and 598 have the same drivers, same impedance, same construction. It's basically the exterior grill pattern that is different.

This affects the frequency response a bit and perhaps some reflections, but thats about it.

They sound a little different (not night and day), but one doesn't sound better than the other - personal taste notwithstanding...
It's not much of a difference. The HD 598 is slightly more refined. But there is an upper mid/treble emphasis in the 598 that the 558 does not have. The richer, warmer sound of the HD 558 might cause some to prefer that headphone.

Higher resolution does not necessarily make it better. I like them both. I like classical on the 598 and rock music on the 558.

As a musician I'm looking for music hidden in the mix.

I'm thrilled when I notice a guitar fill (or keyboard) I haven't noticed before.

I especially want to identify what the instrument is.

So I'm guessing because the 598's are more refined they'll be better at doing this...no?
