My on-board offers more power than Xonar DG?

Just curious, does the maximum volume detail how much the sound card can amp your headphones? It seems that my on-board can offer even more volume than the Xonar DG.

No.  In order adequately prove out what you have described, would be to scope the output to see where the distortion starts to kick in.  You might not be hearing the distortion while using the higher volumes of your built in sound card, yet it could be there.  The ability to crank up your on-board sound and have the perception that it is louder, might just mean that you are not hearing the distortion that comes along with it.

What headphones are you using?

If your on-board audio has a high impedance, you might be hearing a louder bloated bass, not an improved quality bass.
