I knew I wasn't the only one to believe the HD800's do more right than wrong than my LCD3's.

 

Regarding tubes though, I bought a McIntosh 225 to drive the HE-6 (and HD800 but it's kind of over-kill) and it's nothing short of outstanding. It trumps the mjolnir and bha-1 in every single field, including high frequency extension and clarity to my surprise.

 

The HE-6 sound out of this world, you'll have to hear it this summer or something Solude!

Oh don't get me wrong, I love the sound of tubes.  It was a real ear opening experience this summer to hear tube amps just smash top shelf solid state.  But the rolling and failures got annoying.

I've had a tube amp in one form or another in my home for close to 2 decades. But since I sold my LF a few months back, I've been tubeless and for the reasons given by Solude, I gotta admit, living with only SS is kinda liberating. I no longer have to wait 10 -20 minutes for my amp to fully warm up, tubes going microphonic and just plain dying.

Still loving the PWD2>Soloist>HD800 combo and my B22 should arrive early next week but... I had to bail on the GS-X mk2 :(  I might be able to swing it again soon but need to be sold on it from current GS-X|1 owners who use the HD800 as their primary can first.

 

Let me know how you find the combo and what other amps you've tried that didn't measure up.

Hope so.  I have a lot of time in on the look and design of it but in the end... best amp stays.  Not sure I could bring myself to sell it though.  Should be able to find some use for it even if it would be overkill for where it lands.  Or it smashes the Burson and all is right in the world.  Find out soon enough.
