I would just like to add my personal expiences to the thread, hope most do not mind:
I was very skeptical about the whole USB cable debacle myself, and opinions in forums mostly lean towards "it's 0s and 1s, there can't be any difference".
I started with the Pangea 4% silver cable into an E-MU 0404 USB that I purchased from amazon, for relatively cheap, and it took a while for me to realize that it had made a difference, due to the fact that after I installed it I had to run off and completely forgot about it.
Since then, I have worked my way through all of the Audioquest, Wireworld, Kimber, Furutech and Oyaide USB cables, and as you can tell from above, settled with Audioquest as the best for my money.
After discovering the sonic benefits with the Pangea, I was never curious as to why or how, simply wanted to know if "better" was possible or was mainly snake oil after a certain price point.
It's easy to debate, theorize and regurgitate information from other publishings, but to me it was even easier to just purchase and return. BestBuy used to carry all of the Audioquest line via Magnolia, so that was pretty simple, and other online retailers provided the rest, yes, you do lose $5-10 on shipping back, but to me that seemed like a small price to pay for first hand experience.
All of the "audio" USB cables I've tried we're beneficial in varying degrees, against Monoprice/Amazon basics/stuff that comes with your printer/ext. hdd/$30 belkin cables. If and when I heard a sonic difference, I would double check against my GF, friends and family, with a "blind" study, just to ensure I wasn't nucking futs. I also had the same people switch cables around on me, without me looking, to dble check my own conclusions, in no particular order.
After sharing my experience with co-workers, I was met with a lot of "it's 0s and 1s maaan", as I work in IT. This started huge arguments where I felt like a black sheep. So in the end, I brought in the cables I ended up with, and asked others to bring in their own dac/interface, and headphones of choice into the office. This demonstrated to everyone what I had heard with my own ears, and sparked a further discussion and theorizing that I don't care to be a part of, as I rather just enjoy the cables.
I now also own Audioquest Coffee HDMI cables for the same reasons. From what I am told and have experienced, the slight visual benefits do not improve past the "carbon", only sonic benefits continue as you go up the chain, and I've demo'd all of them at home. The sonic benefits are only intended for those with a receiver/pre pro with HDMI ins to be used with an ARC on the TV input, I highly doubt TV speakers will benefit.
Apologies for wall of text.
