Ive never heard the Momentums, so I cant say. Ive heard great things about them though.

 

Personally, I prefer open headphones - I never heard a closed phone that I liked enough to buy.

I am pretty much in the same boat as the original poster, and have narrowed my search down to many of the same brands and models discussed on this thread. I also am looking at the Momentums. The only question I have would be regarding comfort. I am a larger than average person (6'7" 245lbs) so obviously my head is larger than most.  Would the Momentums be comfortable for someone like me? What brands are known for their comfort?  

 

Also, anyone out there in the Atlanta area, that could maybe recommend a good local shop to possibly try out the headphones discussed here?

If your ears are large enough, then I would say get the Momentums. They have the best overall sound of just about every over-ear portable headphones to date. Some people like the Momentums sound signature even more than the HD 600.

From what I have read, it is comparable to the LCD 3's bass and rock performance.

The Beyerdynamic DT880 are rated highly for the money according to the review on the front page of this site.  And you can get a pair at Amazon for $271,  $400 list orice.

Good choice on the HE-400's, it is also very good at your genres. I'd sya they do best at jazz and instrumental, but also very good on rock & reggae. I own the HE-500, which is better to me, but also way more expensive.

You should know that the HE-400 does benefit a lot from a better amp despite its low impedance. My new tube amp has made the HE-400 as well as the HE-500 sing. I COULD be satisfied with the HE-400 and a proper amp, but not the HE-500 and a mediocre amp (for example the fiio e17 that i own). It just seems underpowered COMPARED to when it is properly amped.

I don't want Grado's they are too thin for me, I love a good soundstage with punchy and clear bass great lows, mids and highs. That's pretty much the definition of the HE400's. The PA2v2 is a terrific amp based on what Gary told me, and what I have read. It can drive cans up to 300ohms and has a lot of power. I'll get it probably by february or march.
