Looking for some Headphones ($300 budget) HELP!

Here are some I've looked at.

Headphones:

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 ($130)
Audio-Technica ATHESW9A
Ultrasone HFI-780 ($150)
Brainwavz HM5 ($100)
Shure SRH-840 ($200)
Shure SRH-940 ($280)
AKG K550 ($280)
Sennheiser Momentum ($350)
Sennheiser HD598 ($210)

All of this will be amped with the PA2V2 (portable). And with a Sony Reciever (home)
(The Momentum will be amped only at home).

Genres:

Classic Rock**
Alternative***
Hard Rock**
Metal***
Indie***
Blues*
Acoustic Rock**
Hip Hop***
Rap***
Reggae**
Punk***
Rap Metal***
Nu Metal**
Psychedelic Rock***
Funk Rock**
Folk Rock**
Lil' bit of Techno (Pretty Lights, Moby)*
Lil' bit of R&B (Cee Lo, Amy Winehouse)*

*The "*" represents the level of listening for each genre.*

I want soundstage, but not massive. I want a clear, Punchy Bass, Good Treble, Mids, Highs, and Lows.

Cheers,

the momentum are great but can be uncomfortable for a few people and are of course, the most expensive option of all these.

the 598s are good, also check out the sennheiser hd 558, they have really good sound especially at their price point. also the shure's are similar to the sennheisers, but with more neutrality.

the k550s are also really good, but you have to get a good fit for them to sound good. also they don't have as much bass as the sennheisers or other headphones you mentioned.

the m50s are always a great option but the mids might be a tad recessed. they have good basss though.

i do not recommend any ultrasones, especially as a first headphone

I'd also consider the Amperior's, great bass and overall sound and react very well to an amp.

So for my genres, basically rock.

Momentums (will not be amped with PA2v2, only at home)
HD598
K550
ATH-M50

I think Momentums?

Anything above $300 would not be amped, since I have $360, and the PA2v2 is $60.

Amp doesn't do much for Momentum's, they work pretty well without.

Happy to share my opinion with you!

Unfortunately, I have not heard most of the headphones on your list.

The HD 598 is a terrific headphone, but I would not consider it a powerful, punchy sounding headphone. With some bass EQ, it can be satisfying though. I much prefer the HD 600, which is one of my favorite headphones for its do everything balance. It isn't quite as "clear" and "spacious" sounding as the 598, but it is more refined, smoother, and weightier sounding. More meat on the bones, so to speak. I actually sold my 600's in order to purchase my Denon's because while the bass was satisfying, I still felt it lacked weight and punch with rock music kick drums. The Denons have terrific bass and satisfy throughout the freq range to me, but the DXXXX series is discontinued.

The new D600 is getting more favorable reviews now that it's been around for a while, but opinions are mixed overall.

Overall, I would say the HD 600 is a no brainer for you - everyone should own it at least once and experience its timeless, do everything signature. It remains my "neutral" baseline reference that I compare all others to.

That's why I was considering them, because they don't need an amp.

At first, when I signed up for Head-Fi, I was considering the HD600/650. But they need better amping, and the rig would be over my budget.

The D600 is also too expensive :s.

I also considered the D2000 but they are discontinued and if you want them new, they are $500

Momentum's in that case, great design and great sound.

The need for an amp is highly overrated around here. A powerful amp will flesh things out a bit, but The HD 600 will deliver 90+% of its potential straight from an iPod. It will sound great out of your portable amp and your Sony.

Well, many people told me the HD600/650's were not that good for rock, which ones are better with it? Momentums or HD600?
