Do I need an amp or a DAC or both?

I have an iPod touch 2g and klipsch image s4i and x10. I also got a fiio e11 amp. Do I need a DAC to go with that or should I return that and get something like an e7 that comes with a DAC.

Also, I have a pc with a logitech z523. The pc has integraded sound and should i use what I have above with the pc?

If you want to get the best sound of your PC an external USB DAC is a great and inexpensive way to do so.  As for the iPod the DAC inside it is pretty good and there really is no major need to improve upon it.  The biggest problems with iPods is typically file compression and then the amp stage.

 

In order to take full advantage of an external DAC some people use a Line Out Doc ( LOD ) to bypass the iPods internal DAC and use an external DAC instead.  In many cases I have found that this does not help much unless you have a really high quality external DAC.
