[Review] Sennheiser IE800: Impressions, Frustration and a bunch of What-Ifs

Ok, after having some fit/seal issues. I think the y split is just heavy thats why i lose seal often. I guess shirt clip is necessary for these. Oh well, its a tradeoff i'm willing to take.

Please try using a larger size tip than you normally would "think of customs☺️" try fitting them so they gain a slight suction when you first insert them they will fit funny as if they collapse then they will gently pull out part way and gain a suction and you should have a good seal...give it a try if need run the tip over slightly moist lips and then insert "like customs:wink:" but give it a try just use a larger tip than you normally would as I was told to give it a shot and it worked perfectly ....and I never even thought to think of it  no I've never owned custom IEMs but I have been to auto cross events ....these were made not to sit so deeply in the ear and the oval shape is to allow a slight collapse then vacuum type seal when they pull back or expand "just a thought to how they may work" which is different than most IEMs just give it a shot no it may not work for all as no universal IEM does....but I thought the largest tips were way too big, because I use 1 medium that came on them out of the box and one of the smaller large for my right ear and I got a decent fit out of those as I also do with the Shure SE846 then I was told by a friend to try one size larger I was like but they don't fit they collapse, then he proceeded to explain so I tried and it works....

As a clarification, what tip size are you using now? medium or large? and are you using the rounded or oval tips for your ie800's?

I was originally using one medium that came pre installed when you open the box in my left ear and one large "there are two large I used the ones before the ones on top" in my right ear.....I switched to the largest on top in both ears as they wouldn't or didn't appear to fit before but I did as I was instructed and viola they created a perfect seal and I was sitting looking amazed and dumbfounded at the same time because it's a customs trick as well as racers trick too moisten the tip and it slides in creating a slight vacuum seal affect that works as they're not supposed to sit in the ears deep which most people will end up doing if they don't find themselves getting a proper fit....

I've listened to people complain about the fit and also about the weighted break in the plug 2.5 to 3.5 connector being the cause or too heavy, but think of it from an engineering point of view the construction of these IEMs are great "yes even the non detachable cables grrrr wish they would've came up with a new connector smaller but yes new, as I understand the normal size connectors would've been too bulky and big for these, as they're ceramic "sweet" which makes them durable and lite....so think the weighted end is needed to give them or rather put a slight weight to keep everything in balance the IEMs sit in the ear at a slight angle the suction along with angle keeps them in place which in turn creates a good seal....I really wish they would've explained this more because most people aren't going to think differently about these things they just think they should shove them in your ears and get a good seal yes as most of us do but sometimes there are better ideas out there and no they may not work for everyone if they were they would've been designed to be a custom:blush:

I never gave up on these because my first set I found the sound to be very very nice as well as when I received my AK240 I found them to sound really nice through them I knew they had that sound I was looking for as I've played them through my iPhone and they sound great as well as my latest iPod with a Fiio E17 "I think it was" connected to it as well just about everything I connected them to sounded nice, now granted they will sound better "which made me feel even better" with better or higher res material this is a plus because they will reveal what is there but at the same time they aren't overly unforgiven of poorer material....I took a needed break from them as I sent mine back for replacement or repair as I didn't know the upper cable wasn't supposed to be as stiff as mine were which I think contributed to my strain reliefs splitting as I would literally bend them and they would fit great over ear they were ok with regular wear but I found the over ear fit better because of the stiff upper cable...while they were or right before I sent them out I purchased a set of Shure SE846 and it gave me time to finally listen to a set as I've never owned BA IEMs before found them lite "most not all" in the bass and not as musical to me, but the Shures surprised me they are excellent IEMs and yes they have their teething problems as well as I've found that the material or gasket around the nozzle running from outside to inside the IEM maybe should've been made of a sturdier material as mine allows play between the nozzle which I understand a little is fine but I can see the internals moving and don't feel comfortable with this as I know over time it could break down even more....the other side does not have this much play so I decided to send them back to be on the safe side...when I receive a new pair I will probably sell them to another music lover at a good price☺️ But the sound is excellent indeed I like them a lot the mids are a little more forward yes...the bass is indeed nice but to me not as deep or should I say hard hitting as I feel it should...no I'm not a major bass head but at the same time I want bass where it should strong on the track..I love highs as well and find that the Senns did start out a little bright when first purchased but once they burned in they were excellent and I found myself missing them when I sent mine back. The Shures on the other hand with the blue filter didn't have enough highs where they needed to be as with "think Mariah Cary highs" and the white filter is too bright sometimes "not all" we came up with a mod of removing the foam damping of the black filter as it has acoustic fibers at the bottom which are not touched and this proves to be the good middle ground "very very nice indeed" I even purchased a balanced copper cable to run with them because I thought that the pure copper would or could work along great with the white filter...it was and still is nice, but I think the black filter mod was the best overall compromise. I just found myself missing the iE800s period, so I waited and still am on my other set to come, I decided to just go out and purchase another set and when the other set come they come ...but I didn't want to wait any longer....☺️ And I think "for now" these will be my go to IEMs it was good I put them down for a while because it gave me time to miss them...now if we could only get ALO audio to do customer balanced modifications to people who already own a pair we would be ☀️:sunglasses:.....

How sad -
the left driver of my beloved IE800's cut out intermittently for a minute or two then gave a high pitched squeal and bit the dust.

They are 18 months old and still under warranty - I have the original box and serial number but have no idea what happened to the original invoice

Anyone have any experience with warranty issues with sennheiser - do you need the original receipt or will the serial number suffice. ? Obviously I am hoping an invoice is not required.

wow, what a write up! thank you for being so extensive in your reply, though going back to the large tips, were they the rounded ones or the oval shaped ones?

I tried to post a photo of the ear tip holder since you didn't understand when I said the largest ones on the end I would believe they are round, but this may not apply to you as I stated it might not be a size up for "you" for me it is because I use one standard medium or large in left ear and large in right so to go up to the largest was natural as well as I found them to give the best seal and fit as they should, as they were not designed for a deep insert....even though some are still trying this "as I too did" but it's stated in the paper work ....for some it works and other aren't comfortable with it I'm keen to try new things and different ways it works nice for me as I put it to the test or rather sleeping test to see if they would fall out and when I woke up they were still in with some great music playing by the way☺️

At the moment I've only got a small tip to use, and they keep falling off. I imagine I'd be about a medium, so with your theory it would make sense to invest in a pair of large tips.

When I had bought my IE800's, it didn't come with any tips, so I'm really playing trial and error. The fact that Sennheiser charges $70 each pair doesn't help my case either. So my decision will really be the large rounded tips vs the large oval tips.

May I ask when did you buy these? And please contact Sennheiser directly ask them or rather tell them that you didn't receive the provided tips as they would probably like to know why as well....I'm assuming you purchased these in a store if not then I understand what you're saying and I'm sorry as they should've included them with your purchase :pensive:

Adding my impression with comply Tx-200 Tips, fully recommended for the IE 800, after trying various ones from different companies, they fit the best on the IE 800 and they don't 'fall' so easily as other do. Also very comfortable on the ears. For my opinion somehow improving the isolation and overall sound quality compared to other i tried.

Nice, do the volume control buttons work on your iphone/ipod?

Unfortunately no, the volume Up/Down does it work.  We have Apple to blame for that due to their rules and costs for MIF cert.

I wonder why they included two L and only one M.  M fits be best.

Did you not find that the TX200 thickened the sound, made the IE800 sound a bit slow / heavy?

...If not, did you go for the same size Comply as you had for the stock tips (i.e. M -> M) or did you up / down size?

...I use the M tips on the IE800s (the ones pre-installed), and have the M size TX200, and - don't like what they do to the sound (remove some air, and as mused, make it seem slower / heavier), and would like your opinion...

Thanks.

I just guess my ears not that sensitive to the sounds but i felt just a bit more 'closed' sound since the Comply are leaving no open space in the ears. I usually also use M tips but with these TX200 i found the large one to be most effective and comfortable.
