Please Help With Headphone Selection

Hello, I am in the process of selecting my first set of real headphones and would appreciate your opinion.

My use is two fold. First use is monitoring while I record professional screencasts. Thus accuracy would be helpful. Second use is music - I listen mostly to rock, pop and classical. The headphones will be used in my home office.

I suspect closed headphones are more appropriate for monitoring. Also, when alone in the office I tend to listen to my very good speaker/sub setup.

I will sometimes connect the headphones through my laptop but most of the time will connect to the M-Audio fast track c 400, which to my ears has strong sq.

My preference would be to keep the purchase to around $150, less if there is no appreciable advantage to more expensive options. Based on reading reviews here I am considering

- Audio Tech ATH-M50

- Shure SRH 840

- Brainwave HM5 or other less expensive clone like Jaycar

Did I miss an option that is better? What headphones do you believe is best for my uses?

Thanks in advance.

Very best,

Thank you for your reply. If you had to chose 1 (I do) which would you chose?

If you want to stay within the range of headphones you mentioned yourself, ATH-M50 is a good go. It's a pretty good studio monitor. Try to grab the straight coiled anniversary limited edition, if you finally go for it. besides, SRH 840 or MDR7506 is also good bet.

Good Luck

Heya,

Myself, I would probably go with one out of this group: K271 MKII, A700X, or KNS8400. It would come down to design, comfort, build, etc. Two of those have detachable cables. One of those has a tank-like build. Overall, I think I would go KNS8400. It is very durable, detachable cables, would last longest, and you can change the pads to suit taste.

I would not touch an M50 for anything other than DJ'ing at live events.

Very best,
