I do not think these are strong enough to drive the HD650s at all. The output signal is quite weak from what I have read. I also strongly doubt these will sound better than a dedicated dac + amp in a portable rig.

It's not strong enough unless maybe you have the v1 which honestly no one knows how it will do. I dont know of 1 documented v1. Anyways, I dont see any reason you cant use one of those heavy duty amps with the Tera and have a great experience if youre going for the HD650 portable rig.

EDIT: Please note that many users have reported that the Tera Player scales up well with an amp (mainly in a desktop rig). I advise an amp with the Tera Player to drive the HD650's well.

See post #38 in this thread. I have an V1 (but no HD650's).

Looks more like carbon fiber vinyl sticker......I've been thinking of covering the square back part (not the ridges) with the same type of material. Haven't gotten around to it yet

Looks like snake skin pattern ;p
I just covered all the Square part including the ridges. Think of it as a screen cover from dust, scratches, etc.

So I have taken the leap....I just ordered a Tera Player from Charles. And now I will hang onto all of my other recent purchases to see what works best with this new DAP. I have a DX100 to compare to, and I have the Yamaha EPH-100 for iems. In addition I will use it with either the Tralucent T1 or the Continental V2 to feed either the HD650s or the Beyer T1. Somewhere in there I will find a combo that I will keep and then sell the rest on here. Although I may have to also try a modded pair of Porta-Pros just to fit into the crowd here on this thread :)

Looking forward to hearing what all of the excitement has been about with the Tera!

I have greatly improved the "randomness" of the random play mode by consolidating all of my folders that contained only one or two files into a single folder that now contains all of the onsies and twosies. I simply named the folder "Singles". I now hear my music collection much more "randomly" without the same tune being repeated often.

Just for convenience, I am linking here to a post on the other Tera thread about why onesies and twosies will play more often and therefore mess up the randomness:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/599685/altmann-tera-player/1785#post_9201068

Edit: If you want to get the maximum randomness from the Tera, here are some suggestions that will help:

Each folder (typically artist folders) in the root folder should have the same number of sub-folders (typically album folders)

Each sub-folder (album folder) should have roughly the same number of WAV files.

There should not be any WAV files in the root folder or in the first level of folders (artist folders), as these WAVs will function like the onesies and twosies mentioned above.

Following these guidelines would mean every song has about the same chances of being selected by the random process. However, not everyone is that concerned about getting random play to work  perfectly, and therefore would not be willing to rearrange their music to accomplish perfect randomness. I happen to always listen to my music randomly and so am willing to go to these lengths to get better randomness, and I'm not that concerned with navigating to a particular song or artist (which makes the lack of a screen on the Tera a complete non-issue for me).

And it's possible that someone might want to emphasize some music and de-emphasize some music. I created folders that each have 3 sub-folders that each have roughly the same number of WAVs, but then I put a lot more WAVs in one sub-folder so that those songs would play less often. If I had some new music and wanted to hear it often at first, i could put it in a artist folder, or put it in a sub folder (album) with fewer songs in it so those WAVs would play more often in the random process.

Howdy BAM BAM,

I just come from the local Blues Session, met my girl, back in my lab and hey, Tera-Player thread lock #2 !!

It was a great discussion. Participants were not calling each other 'names', it was hot - but still disciplined.

From my point of view, recent aggressors to the Tera-Player thread are just reaching out for a helping hand.

They feel cheated by the industry, probably spent many thousands on DAPs and stuff and are utterly frustrated with the results they are getting.

Reading about a simple device that does not disappoint but does deliver real satisfaction, they just freak out.

It is really hard for them hearing about the great sound of the Tera-Player with the Koss Porta-Pro, while they just have spent 1500$ on a short-lived IEM or other headphone solution.

It just hurts them deep, and we should treat them with respect and understanding.

However, the censorship should come to a full stop now !

We are just talking about music and enjoyment.

The Tera-owners ride the wave hardest, so it is natural that some people become a little jealous, but that is normal, it cannot be any other way ...

Charles :)

I am sure that since this is the Tera-Players OWNERS forum, civility will reign, as Tera owners are a pretty happy group and have confidence in their choice of audio equipment. Let's keep this thread polite!!!

Censorship should've stopped before. I think as Head-Fier's we all ride the wave hard, I dont think we can say that Tera owners ride it the hardest, we are only a small segment of the community. In the case of the last aggressor, he couldn't fathom anything technically sounding better than the Clip+. He pointed out the dangerous side of the audio community. He relied on these blind studies and measurements. Will measurements that look odd really tell you something? If you measured the Tera Player, would you find the tuning characteristics of it's non-fatiguing sound signature? I'm sure someone that had no idea about this wouldn't comprehend that that might be the reason for the tuning, not that I know that's how it'll look. And blind tests, while sounding like a great idea is quite foolish. A blind study takes how long? If I'm gonna use a device for years, I'm gonna make a decision on which sounds better to me over at least a few songs, not just a single song I am not familiar with. Only true way to get a real test is to load a playlist onto all the devices you wanna test, same quality of music, and have someone control the device for you in a place you cannot see. When you call out a step to take, like "next song", a random amount of delay is added before that happens so you cannot tell which device it is. I'd like to see the results of that when someones given a chance to listen for more than just the length of a song.

Yes, hopefully no owner will complain about how no owners are taking measurements.....The entire head-fi community is generally nice, I just think people get way too stuck in their ways, myself included, to ever be a perfect society. In the case of the last thread though I tried to be quite reasonable with the aggressor about being polite and asking for information from the community of Tera Player owners and it would seem he did not wish to take my advice, even though someone did offer to meet up with him. I welcome anyone wishing to find measurements as it deviates from our comfortable norm of not caring, but I always point out to friends and people that come to me for advice at school, if you're gonna do something, do it right. That's why I refuse to take measurements and also why one wanting measurements should not be calling every person that could help them foolish and having been duped. That's not gonna go anywhere.

In celebration of this thread, let's post some pics? I'll take one later and post it up.

Let's just hope that the empiricists don't try their bullying tactics here too, as the Tera Player should be celebrated as a beguiling sounding DAP and not subjected to the ire of measurement obsessives intent on belittling owners.

Enjoy sublime music and sound the Tera Player way, with love and romanticism.

Cheers,

Andy.
