How about a quick review of the two pairings....short and to the point would be great.

Thank you!

I'll do that within the next 2 days, promised. Tough workdays ahead!

Damn it! I couldn't resist any longer... I've made an order.

Damn head-fi, commiserations to my wallet.

Congratulations to your ears and sorry for your wallet!

Incidentally, are you enjoying your HP8 MKII? I've just ordered one from Icon Audio and am curious to know your opinion of it.

Thanks,

Andy.

Yes I'm very much enjoying it, it was a huge upgrade from my previous amp.

It was especially tasty as I got it 2nd hand, and it may as well have been brand new! They're really built to last. I highly recommend the HD800s with it.

Now to sell off my old stuff to fund all this out of control spending (I'm a student damn it!), I'll be sad to see my old stuff going frown.gif

I just tested out my TP with a Pico Slim in the mix and an ALO cryo mini cable with the Senn ie800's. I suspect there is a component of impedance mismatch. With the Slim, the bass becomes subwoofer like at low levels and fierce at high levels. However it seems to lose a bit of upper midrange and treble sparkle as well as some transparency leading to slightly less 'magic' than with the TP alone. Will test a bit more in the upcoming days and report back if I find anything different. But for now, despite being an admitted bass head, I'm preferring the TP solo.

Edit: Grammar

Hmm, I would have thought that any impedance mismatch would be increased by having TP-->IEMs rather than TP-->External amp-->IEMs... I thought the whole point of an external amp would be to 'bypass' the high-ish TP output impedance.

This is why a lot of people seem to be using external amps with the AK100 at least.

Strange it seems the other way around to you, the pico has <1ohm doesn't it?

My engineering days are long behind me, so I will refrain from making any (more) claims re: impedence values, etc.. Aamof, I should have kept my mouth shut earlier.  What I will say is that my former listening impressions fully apply, and that I still prefer the TP solo into the ie800's. There is still a slight bass roll off, cured by increasing the volume slightly, and other than that,I'm in a state of sonic bliss.

Pico Slim is about to be posted for sale, for those interested.

TP & 1+2

Fantastic pairing.

Powerful lows and sweet mids and highs.  Mids and highs are more layback than that of EX1000 (a bit too much, IMHO).  I said to Gavin that if they are could be a bit forward and it would be perfect.  The mid-lows are so powerful that sometime it overwhelmed the sub bass to which I can hear but, in comparison to the overall, was very very slight imbalanced.

TP & Sony EX1000

Very analytical due to its forwarded mids and highs.  Very good bass texture (in this respect, I think is better than that of the 1+2) but overall bass is insufficient to make the overall balance.  This could be made up by plugging in the ADL Stride into the equation but still again in general, the Sony is mid & high biased.

Subjectively observation and hope this helps.

Louis

There's plenty of grunt from the Tera Player to drive the Miracles. Bass is well defined and thunderous, the mid-range is holographic and cymbals actually sound realistic. The only caveat is that I swapped cables to a Moon-Audio Black Dragon IEM upon receipt, so don't know whether the stock cable is as good. But hey, a cable doesn't significantly alter the sonics THAT much.

Cheers,

Andy.

Thanks smial, I've found miracles to sound a bit harsh in the upper-mids and treble with poor impedance matching (plus bass roll-off)

Given that the TP seems to be so great to start with, is it a case of a backwards step (due to impedance of Miracles) being still within acceptable bounds or is it not an issue at all?

Pico Slim is about to be posted for sale, for those interested.

Consider this: The IE800 have exaggerated bass and the Tera Player has bass roll-off with low impedance phones (the Senns are 16 ohms). The Pico Slim has <1 ohms output impedance, therefore no bass roll-off with the Senns.

So the equation goes (roughly) like this:

IE800 + Tera Player

IE800 + Pico Slim

Now, which one's better?  smile_phones.gif

That is exactly what my ears are telling me. biggrin.gif

You forgot the high frequency roll-off, which is always there even without a load.
