I recommend you guys check this site before purchasing your hi-rez tracks. It could be the hi-rez remasters have less dynamic range in some cases. Just thought it might be a helpful tool to use.

It's why I rather buy an album that's 24/48 from HDTracks over the CD version. Something about when they prep it for CD changes the dynamics a lot. People often mistake this as the reason they hear more from high-rez music, but really it's not that much of a difference.

Sorry Ken. My apology.😉

YES! The little box from Germany arrived! I have only been listening for 5 minutes with modded porta-pro and so far so good. More when I have something to report.

So....I am almost speechless. What a sound! Does this thing burn in? Does it get even better?

It may sound strange that I just got a new portable DAP a couple of hours ago and I have mostly been listening to it through the iCAN desktop amp I have in for review, but I listen to my transportable desktop setup 95% of the time so that is how I will be using the Tera. The iCAN amp has a little switchable effect that boosts the micro-details and soundstage. With my DX100 it is so close to being a great sound, but it has a tendency to veer into being too bright and a little fatiguing. Well swap the Tera for the DX100 and oh my god, I must be dreaming! All of the detail and none of the edginess. Again, I have a hard time finding words for what I am hearing.

I am speechless!!!

You have received your Tera Player?! Well Congratulations..................

No idea what is happening, my unit obviously does not want to take the trip to Hong Kong as it is still sitting in Germany after being picked up on the 13th February by DHL and according to tracking ready for shipment on the 15th at 8amconfused_face_2.gif

Gonna wait a few more days, then I will have to ask Charles to help me check what is happening with the package???blink.gif

DHL should have passed that to Hong Kong Post back in February and then delivered to your address. Another tracking number was shown on DHL's tracking page and I was able to enter that one here

http://app3.hongkongpost.com/CGI/mt/enquiry.jsp

I was not home last December and they put a delivery note inside my mail box. Then I went to the Post Office in Quarry Bay and picked mine up there.

Just an FYI - I've been ordering tons of organic foods and nutritional supplements from US for several years and they were delivered by DHL. So far two out of dozens were pretty messed up by DHL. About a year ago they basically ruined the original packaging and just stuffed everything inside their own boxes afterwards. Plenty of missing items and I had to call them up before they made an attempt to find some of them in the airport. At least one of those supplements should be opened while they managed to break the seal in order to inspect the probiotics inside. Not even leaving a note at all and they never followed up after asking them for compensation. IMHO very unprofessional to say the least.

Yet another incident last month after Chinese New Year. They were cutting right through the boxes as usual and multiple packs of my organic quinoa were "getting hurt" by those cutters. Scattering all over the box and the same deal when I checked another separate box with organic oatmeal. I had to take some pictures and see how it goes this time. Just not exactly expecting those surprises after paying hundreds of dollars for 100+ pounds of foods.

At least they did not "work their magic" with my TP so hopefully yours will arrive safe and sound as well.

Speak of the devil and he arrives, LOL.

In Cantonese we would rather say "Speak of Cao Cao and Cao Cao arrives" instead.

Or we might call that "Law of Attraction" in action since our thoughts create our reality.

This is such a nice story to tell someone about the "adventure" of your TP.

...

I read that you are using the Tera Player with the modded Porta Pro (I assume it's the Krammer mod without cutting out the foam covers).

I found that the burning in occurs with the modded Porta Pro - after 150 hours and around a month or so, the bass tightens considerably and there's much better balance to the entire tone of the headphone with the mids and highs more forward. Initially I did the quarter-mod as well (cutting a quarter coin sized hole in the foam) but after burning in, decided that the original foam without cutouts sound the best.

I know others have laughed at using such a low priced headphone with the Tera Player but it does match very well and offers a size of music not matched by IEMs. Much closer to reality. I have some pretty high end IEMs in my collection but I am thoroughly enjoying the sound through my modded Porta Pros! :-D

I would also like to share what Charles recommended me to try. Perhaps more difficult to do than the simple Krammer mod with drilling holes and perhaps that's why he didn't mention it in his website. It's to paint the drilled plastic discs with Burgundy Resin. I'm just about to do so and will report if I can squeeze more enjoyment out of the TP/PP combo after.

At $30, there isn't any reason why a TP owner shouldn't try the PP as recommended by Charles. After all the pain of ownership (expensive) is already over. :-)

I wholeheartedly agree about the modified Porta Pro as they sound outstanding and infinitely more accomplished than the stock model. HiFlight modded mine and did a stupendous job, though I'm not entirely sure what he did apart from the visually obvious.

Adding Burgundy Resin is an interesting suggestion and reminded me of the Steinmusic Maestro lacquer, which apparently is quite successful controlling resonance though I haven't tried it, as `nail varnishing' my gear is just a step too far! wink_face.gif

Cheers,

Andy.

Now I am tempted to take the plunge. Does it make sense to recable $30 Porta Pro with something really nice such as 99% silver + 1% gold by any chance?

Hopefully you guys will not start questioning the sanity of asking such question here since I am just seriously looking for the very best to pair with a fine DAP.

Thanks.

Reading this makes me want to mod some PortaPros, too - there is smth. positively decadent in using a 1000+ USD DAP with <30 USD headphones, but I just could not live with the sound of unmodded PortaPros for more than 30 minutes.

If I were getting them recabled I'd get a single wire solution like a Litz 2 cable where some of the bundles are use for ground. Part of the elegance of the PortaPro's is they are lightweight and highly portable. I wouldn't recable unless necessary.

Actually it is the modded pair offered by Highflight and he has removed all of the foam. I did burn the headphones in for a while while waiting for my Tera to be shipped, so they should be good to go now. I do like the sound with them for portable use, but it does not come close to the sound with the Tera feeding the iCAN desktop amp I have for review and my Hd650s.

Correction: there is foam on there, but it is just an open donut. I think Highflight swaps the foam for earpads from Pantronics telephone headsets which are donut shaped.
