I'm borrowing a pair of SR-5s with SRD-6 interface box from a friend to decide whether I want to buy them.
As one would expect, they are INCREDIBLY detailed. However, the frequency response is not enjoyable for my listening style. They are bass-light (expected) and mid-heavy (not expected.) This makes them great for acoustic and vocal music, but the mids are so in-my-face that I have a hard time enjoying rock and metal.
My question is: I know transformers do affect frequency response, they being huge inductors and all... If I were to get (or more likely, build) an ES direct drive OTL amp (eg: http://www.tubecad.com/november99/page8.html) is the frequency response likely to change dramatically? Has anyone here used a pair of SR-5s on a direct drive amp without the SRD-6 converter box? What was your experience with this?
This is a situation where I don't want to buy the 'phones without knowing if this will work, but I don't want to build the amp if I'm not going to buy the 'phones. Catch-22.
Any advice? Thanks for your help.
