How dramatically will a direct amp affect the sound of electrostatic headphones, specifically...

I'm borrowing a pair of SR-5s with SRD-6 interface box from a friend to decide whether I want to buy them.

As one would expect, they are INCREDIBLY detailed.  However, the frequency response is not enjoyable for my listening style.  They are bass-light (expected) and mid-heavy (not expected.)  This makes them great for acoustic and vocal music, but the mids are so in-my-face that I have a hard time enjoying rock and metal.

My question is:  I know transformers do affect frequency response, they being huge inductors and all...  If I were to get (or more likely, build) an ES direct drive OTL amp (eg: http://www.tubecad.com/november99/page8.html) is the frequency response likely to change dramatically?  Has anyone here used a pair of SR-5s on a direct drive amp without the SRD-6 converter box?  What was your experience with this?

This is a situation where I don't want to buy the 'phones without knowing if this will work, but I don't want to build the amp if I'm not going to buy the 'phones.  Catch-22.

Any advice?  Thanks for your help.

There will be others who are more electrically inclined who will reply, but you would have to alter the bias circuit to supply 230V instead of the quoted 540 volts of that circuit.

Or just buy an Stax amplifier from the past which has both Pro and Normal bias available.

Or buy the Stax SRA-3S for sale on ebay - a great sounding phono preamp that would suit your phones nicely.

Yup, I know about the different bias voltages. That should be easy-ish to deal with.

I looked on eBay and didn't see anything that would work for less than $1k, most closer to $2k. I'm hoping that building one myself can be a lot cheaper than that.
