The Fiio E11 would be a great headphone amplifier connected between the Xonar and your headphones (back panel or front panel jack).

where I feel a significant improvement in my boxes (they are already playing very well) ...

with a receiver, dac, amp?

Your M-Audio AV40s already have built in amplifier(s), so adding receiver or amplifier would not change anything.

Just plug the AV40s 3.5mm connector into the Xonar DX's line-out (green) jack.
