Sennheiser HD 518 vs Audio-Technica ATH-TAD400? (for a metalhead noob)

Lower the bass in the EQ. Its what I do, and it helps out tremendously. Burning in helps some too with clarity. Mathrock is also super fun on these.

I think that more modern stuff (as in metalcore) sounds better on them than dream theater, for them I would like more clarity, and probably a bit less bass (i´m definitely not a basshead :D),
they don´t feel as clear as people in reviews described them, but that might be to the lack of burn-in, or I need to get used to hearing bass, as these are probably my first propper headphones. I´m definitely not giving them back, however it apears that they sound best a bit blasted, at which point I could be wearing speakers from my roommates point of view :D

Get yourself a nice compact amp like a Fiio E11 or JDS Labs CMoy 2.03BB
for tighter, more articulate bass and greater overall clarity.

whats the lower price limit for headphone amps that are actually worth buying (probably portable ones, because of space)? I´ll admit that I know nothing about them. I do study electrical engineering, so I do know something about amps, but not much managed to stay in my head...
what exactly is the point of headphone amps? an amplifier basically just makes the signal louder right? and depending on a frequency response, it changes the color of the sound. Is the point perhaps in better impedance matching, thus lowering standing waves in the signal and losses along the signal path?

gives more power to headphones that need more juice. thats it in a ultra dumbed down and basic explanation. higher the impedance on a can, more juice it needs to produce good sounds.

About $60.00 or so.

Here are a couple of recent threads which provide plenty of info on the subject:

Does sennheiser make any cases for this type of headphones? I  would expect that that they would as multiple models have more-less the same shape, however I can´t seem to find any cases on their page, or in the e-shops.
I guess the reason why I´m looking for a case is clear, I don´t want to risk accidentally damaging the headphones when carrying around in my backpack (sometimes i tend to stuff a lot of things in there). Perhaps you know some other general cases that would work?

since I´m writing this, I´ll go ahead and ask one more thing. Do you think that I would find a cable with 2.5mm jack on one end and 3.5mm at the other? (I´m asking because i remember that finding even a 1m regular jack extension was a nightmare) I would probably use that one rather then the bundled up 3m cable with a reduction.
Thanks :)
