+1 on the Shure 840's. Primary reason I got a Magni. I tried the 840's out of my Darkvoice 336i with only fair results, and felt I needed some soild state juice for them. The Magni drives them really well. I like the Darkvoice more for my Senn HD580's and my Beyer DT880 600 ohm's though. I am a self confessed tube guy though. bigsmile_face.gif

Unplugged my Magni and hooked the Modi up to my Little Dot MKIII for a couple hours and I was shocked. The Modi was considered the weak link in the M&M combo and some have had some issues with brightness/treble spikes and stuff like that with the Modi. But I think pairing with a warm/intimate amp (basically: a tube amp) like the MKIII really makes it shine. Sounded very good.

I posted that before realizing they were still $200.

I thought it was a promotion a long time ago.

 

Would getting this combo enhance the SQ of a new Macbook Pro?

 

I know MBPs have decent sound cards.

 

(I'm using Sennheiser HD598s)

Yes, but don't expect too much. HD598 doesn't really need much amping. The DAC will be the source of most of the improvement.

The Modi offers 24/96 sampling rates.

 

The Fiio E17 offers 24/192 sampling rates.

 

Is this even a comparison that should be made?

Do you have any 24/192 music?

 

I would say you're unlikely to hear the difference regardless, but if you don't have (or intend to purchase) any 24/192 music then it's even less of a concern.

I suspect most folks can't even hear any difference between 24/96 and 16/44.

Dude me FREAKING TO! I was going to buy a Asus Sound card for $120 but I'd MUCH RATHER buy a NICE Schiit Dac! OMG I'm so BUYING THIS TODAY

 

That schiit is BANNAS 

 

I'll still be using my sub Par $100 hybrid tube amps. Which I'm starting a nice collection of but YAY! GOOD CHEAP DAC BY SCHIIT! Me GUSTA. Now to find a new Hybrid tube to match with it :D

Me to, and sadly I don't even have a "real" tube yet. Only my few cheap Hybrids. Still with the induction of this $99 MADE IN THE USA DAC, I can save a few dollars and get my self a real tube maybe :D

I think my tube amp fleshes out the Senns and Beyers a bit better. The magni still sounds good driving them though. Nice tight bass especially. For the price and no tube hassles, the Magni is a great deal, I think. The Shures sounded a little flabby and rolled off with my tube amp. They sound a lot better with this little Schiit!

True, but that might b because Of the tube ur using. My 12ua7 is tighter than my eh6992 in the same amp
