Well mine did come in a strange box that said "Stark Industries" on the side... didn't think anything of it at the time. smily_headphones1.gif

Honestly I would try it again. I watched the entirety of lawless and part of another moive with no problem. No error message and the little blue arc reactor light on the dac lights right up when I plug it in.

My "camera kit" is an after-market 5 in 1 from amazon as an aside.

Is it? Maybe I have my volumes all wrong. I have it at 12 o clock and my Google Music volume maxed, but win7 task bar volume control to only like 15%. Should I be maxing everything and use the amp volume to tune the loudness of the music? Ugh, I hate having a new toy at home and being stuck at work lol :P

Yes. Everything should be maxed except the amp. That is unless you get clipping/distortion somewhere.

Anyone have compared Magni to similarly priced desktop amp like FiiO E9/E09 or others?

I didn't get a chance to compare directly, but I did have the E9K prior to getting the Magni. I think they're comparable in SQ, with the Magni being more neutral. The E9K is slightly warmer but with a bit of top end harshness compared to the Magni. What you gain in the Magni is more neutral sound and better output impedance for lower impedance headphones.

What you gain in the E9K is a gain switch, RCA line out and pre-out, as well as the dock to allow the E07K and E17 to dock without taking the RCA input, allowing you to have two devices hooked up to the amp instead of just one on the Magni. If you want a slight advantage in SQ, go for the Magni. If you want still fantastic SQ and versatility, go for the E9K, though knowing that anything less than 80ohms may be affected by the high output impedance, unless it's a planar of something like the AKG K/Q701 which doesn't become affected by the output impedance of the E9K.

Those who say one is much better than the other is spitting sheer hyperbole. Stay unbiased and you'll see that they're both solid amps. I do say the E9K is cleaner sounding than the older E9.

Would the magni be a good amp for a Philips X1?

I own a fiio E10. Would the modi be worth the money, knowing that I have a tight budget?

I'm a little confused to what this does in terms of music quality (specifically, gaming quality) on the PC. I have the Playstation Pulse PS3 headset and the Bose QC15. Would I see any improvement? Also, why the need for both the Magni and Modi? (total new guy here).

TL;DR You will probably hear a difference, though it depends on what you have right now (soundcard and headphones)

The Modi is a DAC, which takes the 1's and 0's of music files and turns them into the variations in current and voltage of an analog signal. The Magni is an amplifier which amplifies this signal (never would have guessed) to the strength needed to drive your headphones. A soundcard has both. However, depending on what soundcard you have, these will probably sound better because of lower distortion (and other factors) which will result in a perception of greater detail, soundstage etc.

Anyone able to compare this to the FiiO E17? This little stack looks awesome and I'd love to free up my E17 for away-from-home use.

The Magni is a headphone amp only: RCA inputs (various sources, whatever you want to amplify) and a 1/4" headphone output.

The Modi is a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) only. Basically, it's how you get a better quality (music) signal from your computer.

They go great together, complement each other, etc. .... but, you don't need both -- each will work without the other. Just depends on what your system requires (I'm a little unclear of your rig).

Generally, "music quality" is improved by using an outboard DAC such as the Modi, because from what I understand, the actual DAC chip, etc. in a dedicated DAC will be better quality/ be isolated/ quiet, etc. -- as compared with the (cheap?) DAC circuit built-in your PC.

Hope that's of some help.

So if I were to buy an M&M stack, I could get by with this http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021814&p_id=5346&seq=1&format=2 and this http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030301&p_id=8616&seq=1&format=2 cable, right? The first to plug them together, and the second is the proper USB cable for the Modi?
