SM64 To Replace SM3 - Page 15

thanks, keep us update how things unfold. Do you have the SM64 V2 or V1?

I have v2. Also, I'm going to be receiving a free GoVibe amp from soundearphones shortly via a promotional offer. I'm looking forward to seeing how the SM64 will stack up against the SM3 when an amp is brought into the fray. Hopefully the SM64's true capability will be brought out. I hear that the SM3 doesn't change noticeably when amp'd? Is this true?

No it doesn't imo, probably because the sm3 is easy to drive.
I run them mostly through my RSA Shadow and occassionally on my iPhone.

Would be interested to hear comparisons of sm64 against Heir Audio's 3.ai or 4.ai.

I just received an Email from Earsonics that they will ship my upgraded SM64 on thursday :)

I havn't listened to any music through IEMs since I sent my SM64 away...these thing made me become an IEM-fascist and I could not stand the SQ of any of the in-ears I have lying around here...

It sounds like those other IEMs need to quit lying around and go into hiding.wink_face.gif

The bass and treble are more prominent on the 64 than the 3 -- the treble actually sparkles -- but I do miss the milky vocals of the SM3. However, the vocals are noticeably more refined and intimate on the SM64 compared to the W3's. Instrumentals do sound better on the SM64 than the SM3 though.

What source are you using when not amping?

anyone compared these to Westone 4s yet?

actually the sm64 is relatively new, im curious why ES chose to take the time/effort to mod it rather than simply sending a replacement v2 instead.

I finally got my upgraded SM64 back from Earsonics :)
So far it sounds like they really did what they promised.
Mids (overall) are more forward.
Super high frequencies no longer sound kind of harsh.
And because of the lowered impendance they are a bit louder than before :)

Now I just have to get used to the more forward and therefor kind of more musical sound.

not a great way to launch a product in my opinion. Making simple hardware revisions like SM3 v1 to v2 is fine however changing the sound signature right after the release means they don't know what they are doing.

They just reacted to the (mild) criticism of the people that missed the "unique ES signature".
Lowering the impendance is a bit weird, because I don't think that heir would lower the impendance of their new Tzar-series because of some people complaining that they cant run the IEMs correctly. But its not a bad thing I would say.
And don't get me wrong, the "old" version sounded really good and as far I can tell the new one does too.

And if Earsonics really wanted to use the first few owners of the SM64 as some kind of lab-rats for testing their new product, that's fine for me :D
The upgrade to the version that evolved from all the cons in the reviews here is for free and no one is forced to let Earsonics do it.
In the end, we consumers win, because we get a more refined product. Nothing to be upset about imo.

Still, i think it would be much better move for them to just replace the v1s rather than modding.
Imagine the early adopters who've just gotten it new and have to take the trouble and MONEY to have it sent back again.

Having said that, it seemed to me that they continue to let stores peddle v1s without doing a recall.
I don't know what the impact would be in the secondary market in future, but it would make difficult for buyers to ascertain which version they had especially when it does not state anywhere in the packaging.

Coming from the SM3, i do think the sq was improved in some ways and it DID sound impressive at first, however i couldnt take the sibilance enough to sustain prolong listening.

Well I just got my SM64 in the mail along with the Calyx Coffee....expensive, but still quite a deal considering that you get both from Sound Earphones.  Anyways, first impressions are VERY VERY good.  I have Heir 4ai and just sold my Westone 4 to get these so more to come tonight have some extended listening.  My first thought is that EarSonics NAILED the soundstage on these.  BA units seem to always be finicky when it comes to that, too big or too small.  Imaging is also excellent...okay more soon.
