I need a good portable Headphone amp.

I recently purchased a set of ATH-M50 headphones. I am fairly new to the world of high-quality sound equipment, but not new to the world of music. I just have a few questions, and I appreciate any advice you're willing to give me.

What exactly is the benefit of a portable headphone amp (i do with certainty want a portable one)?

Is listening to my new headphones with my iPod touch 4th gen bringing down their full sound quality?

Any recommendations for a cost-effective but good headphone amp?

I apologize if I am coming off as ignorant or naive.

With your ATH-M50 headphones adding a headphone amp is not going to enhance the sound much.  A headphones amp be it portable or other may tighten up the bass a bit and give a little more sense of space, but typically the output from an iPod can actually be quite good if fed into a decent set of headphones / speakers.  If you already enjoy the sound of the ATH-M50 with your iPod then I say keep that basic setup.  If you plan on upgrading to a higher end headphones like a Denon AH-D2000, AKG K550, or custom IEM then I highly suggest purchasing a headphone amp.  I personally use the Total Bithead for portable amping because it has two headphones outs, is battery and USB powered, and includes an DAC which really improves PC listening.
