Sennheiser HD650 Upgrade

I'm looking for a headphone to go with my Sennheiser HD-650.

i LOVE them already, but have $700 to spend on a new pair of headphones. smily_headphones1.gif

Something with a little more treble and bass would be great.

Currently looking at the HE-500 or HE400. Something with a sound similar to the Sennheiser but differ in presentation.

DAC: NuForce Icon HDP
PSU: Sigma o11

Any recommendations would be great. Thanks!

Thanks!

Might be pushing it, but have you considered just owning one headphone - HD800?

HE-500 would be more similar in presentation to the HD650. The HE-400 would be a better compliment. They have a lot more sparkle up top, and subbass digs deeper. Seems like exactly what you're looking for.

I agree with this. HE-400 seeing as you already have the 650s... or save for the lcd 2s. ( but thats highly out of budget)

Get the HE-500.

Eventually it will evolve on you and you won't feel the need to own the HD650 anymore.

I once owned both, vowed to never sell off the HD650 for about 3 months of owning both... Then sold off the HD650.

Audeze LCD-2. comfortably plays in the same game as the HD-800

If going with the HE-500 you'll need to upgrade your Icon HDP, which is rated at 250mw in 50ohms. May not be ideal.

HD800 is more neutral, which im not really into. I'm more into a Fun sound. That's why i have Audioengine A5+ Speakers.
Music should be fun, not like a monitor IMO smily_headphones1.gif

basically what you're saying is the HE-500 is an improved HD650, while the HE-400 will sparkle me in presentation with its deep sub-bass. But is it darker than the Sennheiser HD650? I don't like overly dark sound.

LCD 2S is extremely out of budget. I would probably push for one if i wasn't stuck with just a standard DAC/Amp Combo like the Icon HDP. Which i don't think should be used with phones over $800. A little bottleneck. mad.gif

Now im even more scared to get the HE-500's. Was it that significant of an improvement? Don't you miss the Full smooth mid range sound from the HD650? or did the HE-500 do just that for you too. rolleyes.gif

I was afraid of that also. mad.gif Too bad i can't buy another amplifier to use with the DAC inside the HDP. tongue.gif

I pulled the plug on the HE-400. $399 with Velour Pads.

Hopefully the pads will improve the darkness and lack of High's from these headphones.
I have white, red, gray/black headphones and needed a blue one.

I'll let everyone know how these compare to the Q701 & HD650

cssarrow I'd like to hear you compare those 3 headphones as I have the q701/hd650s. :P.

I see that you already made a purchase of the he400. It's a great hp and you'll be very happy with I should think. If you are truly after a complementary hp, I would have suggested a modded fostex like the maddog or paradox. This would give you a closed, isolating ortho that measures well and a very different hp to the hd650.

gL!!
