Best over-ear Open Headphones under 300$?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some open headphones under or around 300$. I listen to many different genres, so as long as they are fairly flexible, it should be ok. I've found Sennheiser HD 598, 600, and also Beyerdynamic DT 880,990. I don't have an amp yet, but i will probably buy one. Do you guys have any suggestions for the headphones? as well as headphone+amp combos.

Thanks.

What music do you listen too most? Do you like bass, mids, treble or a flatish sound?

A bit of everything, largely rock and hip-hop. A fairly flatish sound.

Flater with darker highs yes go with the Senny's. If you like sparkly highs and more bass impact and quantity go with the beyers 770/990. 880 are more neutral overall but are still quite sparkly in the highs.

Personally I have the HD650 which has become my favorite headphone because i can listen to it for hours and hours with zero fatigue. The Beyers fatigue my ears after a while.
It is really a point of preference.

In my opinion, Grado anything doesn't compare.

Have you considered really good closed headphones that sort of sound like open headphones? Something like the Mr Speakers Mad Dogs? The reason I ask is because at one time or another, I have either owned or barrowed for an extended period of time all of the headphones you are currently looking at, and can safely say that the Mad Dogs easily surpass all of the ones you're considering at the moment, not to mention they have the sound I think you're looking for.

Just a thought...

990 is more open. The 880 is a bit more neutral in the bass. There are a few threads on here describing them in detail.

In terms of ohms there are not a lot of sonic differences. The 250 ohms models are easy to find for a good deal than the 600 ohms generally and can be run with an inexpensive fiio amp/dac. You could do that and be easily within your budget.

If you want a rather flat ish response I would say Mad Dog Modded T50rp Fostex my Mr Speaker. Closed, well built orthos, with a very flat response. An amp helps them.

Are you wanting something for on the go? Closed or Open?

Compared to the Beyers mentioned (for example) Grados are much brighter in sound and more forward in presentation. They're kind of opposites: the Beyers being a little dark and Grados being a little bright.

For Hip Hop etc, Grados would be most peoples last choice - they excel at Rock and Jazz and small chamber/classical music, due to their speed and slightly O.T.T. detail retrieval.

The OP is wanting open cans, but I also suggested the Mad Dogs simply because they sound almost open, but give you great comfort and isolation.

I vote for Grado 325IS, great full range sound and extreme high details. And works well just with an ipod.

Thanks for the reply, The Mad Dog Speakers are too expensive in Australia so i probably won't get those. And it's for use at home, open.

I can get DT880/250 for 265, DT990/250 for 249, HD 598 for 260, and HD 600 for 300, which one from here would you choose or are there any other choices?

are the 600 ohm 880's worth paying another 90$ for over the 250 ohm?
