I would consider the HE-400 having used them for a few months along side my HE-500, like 85% the headphone they HE-500 are but MUCH less power hungry.

I owned both and i can state the he500 is the more complete headphone soundwis..the he400 is a bit to agressive compared to the he500...but then again..the he500 needs better amping..so in the end costs more then just the difference of just 300 usd imho

The HD650s I've heard these days sound a bit more bright/aggressive in treble than the HE-500..

The HD650 of today is a rather different animal to that of yesteryear. We know Sennheiser brightened it up at one particular stage a few years ago, but i suspect they've done other, more subtle mods, because that "veil" reputation has gradually fallen away of late, and some people have even found them too bright.

DT880 and HE-500 similar? No. Graphs only tell one part of the story. I've tried both, similar would be an incorrect word to describe the two.

 

 

And keep in mind, the DT880s already have strong bass, coming from a hip-hop/R&B listener. Maybe not as much as M50s, but definitely equal or more than ESW9a.
