HD 598 vs AKG Q701 Amp-less

Hello I bought a pair for HD 598 recently new for $170 but haven't opened them yet. I've seen a lot of people praise the Q701 but they say they need a amp to truly enjoy them and that's out of my budget to buy a amp at this time. Question is what's the better headphone amp-less to use with my old X-Fi. smily_headphones1.gif

Heya,

Your old X-Fi can probably power the Q701 relatively well. Yes it needs an amp. But everything that you plug a headphone into is amplified, it's just a question of to what degree it amplifies. Sound cards in general have decent output.

Both headphones are nice. It's a question of which one's properties you're more interested in, and less about what other people praise.

Very best,

Thanks for the advice, I currently am using a pair of HD 555 which I've been loving for 4 years. I don't have per say one genre of music I listen to I also play video games looking for the best all around pair. Might just buy a pair of Q701 and return whichever pair I like less.

That would be a good idea, also read up about amp and output impedance, because you might pair for example say the q701 with an amp with a very high output impedance , that alters the sound of the headphone, which would make you think you spent so much money for something that sound bad (when its not the headphone that it at fault), also look it collecting your music in high quality (read about lossess or high bitrate mp3, i suggested mp3s because people are going to say you cant hear the difference between lossless and high bitrate mp3)

That is a really good price for new HD598 headphones.

Asus Xonar DG sound card , $26, comes with a half-way decent headphone amplifier and Dolby Headphone 5.1 surround sound.
