Most headphones these days seem to be overpriced. Sennheiser and Shure now think every headphone they release is worth $300 despite how bad it sounds.
I guess AKG and V-Moda now does this too. $300 is the magic number. And to think people say Bose is so evil for selling a headphone for $150.
The only really good deals to me were the Koss Pro DJ100 ($80), K240 Studio ($99) and AKG Q701 ($235).
You know, it's quite impressive how I can attach a $80 headphone like the DJ100 up to my main setup after listening to the Q701 or HD-650 and not be disgusted. I mean it doesn't sound any worse.
The DJ100 does like 90% of what the 650 is capable of (on the same exact setup). The HD-650 is just more comfortable, has a larger soundstage and is less fatiguing.
I also once scored the HD-580 for $150. HD-580 for $150 is a steal! It even sounds better than the HD-600 (IMO). Shouldn't really count though.
The old Maxell DHP-II for $30 was once the best sounding headphones under $75 easily. Too bad it's now so hard to find. It's extremely fragile though.
This is true. Shure's been increasing their prices slowly - just a year ago, SRH 840s were ~130 USD. Now, they are ~190 USD at most retailers. It's getting to the point where it's not much of a bargain for the price anymore.
