Is the Fiio E9K really incompatible with the E7?

I ordered an E9 from amazon, but received an E9K. 

 

Fiio says the E9K is only compatible with the E17, but is that really the case? Or is it just a marketing ploy? 

I'd return it if they're really incompatible, but I was really looking forward to using the new amp/dac combo this weekend =/
