I'd need to pick a can (and only 1) out of these 3 Superlux models, but I'm not able to come to a clear decision.
Currently I have many IEMs (preferred ones: Sony MH1C & VSonic GR04) and only 2 portable headphones (Koss KSC-75 & Portapro, both sounding great to me). I meanly listen to postrock & metal, and I mainly plan to use this Superlux HP at home. I also have a Sony MDR V6 on its way, which can influence the decision.
I checked plenty of reviews and comparisons, but this is what I have figured out so far:
- HD 661 is a "clone" of MDR 7506, which is almost identical to V6: so it looks like this will be a duplicate of my Sony V6, but many reviews also say that HD661 real sound is very different than V6 (in a better way). And many others say that actually the HD661 is also better than HD668B (fanboys or truth ?), but not ideal for metal. Design wise, IMHO, it's the best of the 3, and it would be the only one I'd use also outside.
- HD668B is very well regarded in many reviews (in ljokerl's Shootout it is the best fullsize HP < $ 50, based on current prices), but many other reviews simply label this one as "boring", and suggest to go for HD681, which should be more "lively". This could be my best bet at the moment, as a fullsize semi-open can could be a bit different than the V6 (or the pther Koss). 668B is based on DT990 sound shape, which is also quite interesting. Design wise, I'm a bit afraid of the wings design, which a lot of people label as very uncomfortable, but I appreciate the detachable cable.
- HD681 is described as more V shaped than 668B and definitely to be modded to be compared to the previous 2 (I'm not planning to solder mod it, as I'll surely destroy them). It requires EQ but sound a bit more harsh than 668B. Design wise they are the less favourite of the 3 to me.
- I'll mainly use them with a Sansa Clip+ or connected to my PC.I have also a Fiio E6, so it would not be a problem to give a small amping to any of them, if needed.
Unfortunately I do not have a chance to listen to them in advance, so I can only trust the reviews/suggestions... but I'm really lost between a lot of conflicting feedbacks :-(
So any help in making a better informed purchase is more than welcome.
