If both of them are compared in quiet environment, I think its ok, besides fit, I dont see why they cant be compared. I'm not comparing them directly though, I only focused on SQ there..

Exactly. There are expensive ear buds that compete quite well with IEMs. Listening environment and fit is critical. I have owned some buds but they caused some ear pain (ears too small), but there is an entire thread somewhere focused on the top "bud" style phones, Besudes Yuin PK1, there are some others (I think Blox makes very good buds, as does Hisoundaudio). The statement that buds can't compete with IEMs is an overgeneralization, though in most cases people prefer in-ear phones. Unless, of course, they are still using their iBuds (not Earpods), which do pretty much sound bad. I definitely think Apple too a big step up with the Earpods.
