why sound attenuates at low frequencies with distance from headphones /earphones

Hello,

I've always wandered why low frequencies cannot be heard anymore once headphones, and mostly earphones, are taken away from my head. I can still hear very high freqs, but the low are lost. I remember that normally the air attenuates more low freqs than high freqs with distance, so that seems contradictory. Any help? Thanks.

I was puzzled as well, because it seems totally counterintuitive, as you said. Also, low frequencies have a wavelength of dozen meters. How can they be produced with such little headphones drivers...

The explanation is here : http://www.audiocheck.net/audiotests_frequencychecklow.php (see the cabin effect).

LOWER FREQUENCIES ARE NON DIRECTIONAL

(sorry for capslock)
