Amp for Audio-Technica ATHM50S

Hey guys, im brand-spanking new to forums so here it goes!! Ok, i am planning on buying Audio-Technica ATHM50S headphones (unless someone shows me some that are just as good in bass, but dont build heat) and I want to get an amp for them. I only know about fiio portable amps so I have looked at the e11 and e17 a lot. All my music is on my iphone 4s or my macbook pro. So what will a dac accomplish and what does a LOD accomplish? What is up with a LOD cord? I see it goes through the bottom charger jack not the top what does that do? Do i need a LOD cord for a amp and a dac? What does a dac do that an amp doesnt? (I get its a converter but will i actually need it?) So for the headphones im not sure which amp to get and really the headphone selection is still pending :/ Oh i LOVE bass! Thats why im really upgrading from sony ear buds $30 to the m50s, and I hear beats by dre are all hype. So overall, what does a lod do and what amp do I need? Also, sonce I want to bypass my iphone's amp, what will a amp (dac) do for it? Thanks for bearing with me as I am a NOOB to this! Thanks to whoever steers me in the right direction!
P.S- if anyone can show me some better headphones for a reasonable price other than the m50s, thats be great!

Another ps, the sony xb series also seems appealing though O havent researched it yet. I just want good quality headphones, nice noise reduction etc with nice bass without paying a ton of money. Thanks!

All you need for your iphone is an E11 (the best amp you will find under $100) and an LOD (L9).

The LOD bypasses the iphones internal amp giving you a clean line out signal to the E11. Why it is called LOD (Line Out Dock). You don't bypass the DAC at all. When using your iphone amped with E11 switch it to airplane mode avoiding any mobile phone reception noise. /(the beeps and stuff you hear sometimes in car radios and such)

E11 > L9 is all you will need to bring much happiness to you and ATH-M50.

Thx for the input, only thing though is that the e11 isnt a dac is it? Wont my macbook pro have problems with it? Whoch I dont even know what a amp does for a computer I just want the feature.

If it is the case, then go for E17 Dac/amp

When using E17 on a computer you will take advantage of E17's dac, then indeed you will be bypassing your laptops soundcard using the dac and amp section of E17. However....when using E17 with your iphone you only use the amp section of E17. (you still don't bypass the phones DAC) E11 does not have a dac, it is only an amp.

Soin short if you were only buying an amp for your phone the dac is of no use therefore E11 is the wiser choice. But for phone and laptop you want E17.

Please do not worry it can be confusing, I don't mind helping. smile.gif
