tyrion, I think you made a smart move. If you ever add a speaker system you have improved the preamps sound quality enough you wont likely have to invest in another higher quality unit. Seperating these two fuctions may even marginally improve the headamps sound quality too. Maybe you could be satisfied with the stock preamp outputs sound quality, but if not, how much would you have to spend to get the quality to a level you desire? No doubt many times $50. I have tried three headamps as preamps and they were all much better than you would expect. However, they werent set up like the hd 300 so their line stages were not compromised. Removing the interaction problems posed by the combined signal path of the stock unit through the upgrade will likely elevate the hd 300's preamp performance signifigantly.

duff138, tubes rule. The hd 300 is also a preamp with three inputs and a pass through/ tape out. The amp also has a seperate power supply and only uses two tubes. You will likely pay more for a PPA than this amp even after getting both upgrades.

I had emailed Craig how I prefer a 100k pot. I hoped he would consider that as an option on the next run. I got an email back tonight that he is going to email the purchasers and give us the option of the 50k or 100k pot. How is that. Why did I want the 100k? I find the bass is richer with the 100k pot. I also will be using the loop/tape out to drive a second amp. This will give me two 100k inputs in parallel, which lets the source see a nice easy 50k load even driving both amps. I am VERY impressed with Craig's service.

Just when I thought the only thing left to do was to wait for the amp. More decisions. sacd, as you can probably already tell, my technical audio know how is fairly limited, although getting better all the time. I will primarily use this with my HD-650's. Can you explain benefit of the 100k pot versus the 50k? Thanks.

I thought I did.

I'll try again. One, I like the 100k pot because its easier for the source to drive. Two, I like the sound quality better because the bass is fuller and the dynamics less compressed, which better suits my personal preferance.
