Eddie Current HD 300 order page is up - Page 6

Thanks for the assistance. I am thinking that maybe it would be a good idea to do the cap upgrade so the option to use as a preamp is there. The tube I will do as it is only another $15 I believe. It does look better.

Wow, I'm glad there was more to them than just looks, I hear a lot of people talking about that particular tube so I figured it wouldn't be a bad investment. I'm also a sucker for looks and this bad boys gotta look nice on my shelf!

When I got my original gilmore v1 I totally ignored its preamp function. I had a McCormack tlc-1, a stereophile Class A rated passive/ buffered passive preamp, and I didnt think the gilmore would compare. WAS I EVER WRONG. One day I tried it for no particular reason and I was stunned. The gilmore killed the tlc-1. I have had one of my gilmores doing preamp duty ever since; the tlc-1 is long gone. Dont discount how good a modestly priced product like this or the gilmore amps can sound.

Furthermore, I tried my singlepower ppx3, using a phono to rca adapter out of the headphone output, and again was very pleasantly surprised how good these little headamps perform as preamps. For the very reasonable cost of $50 you upgrade the preamp function to a level that would cost you $400-500 minimum to buy as a seperate unit. The hd 300 is actually already a preamp with 3 inputs and the tape out. However, the line stage is compromised in the effort to improve the headamp function, its main job. The cap upgrade seperates the headamp output and the line output. The headamp will then continue to work optimally, as before, but the line stage will be much improved. If you EVER think you will use the hd 300 as a preamp you will kick yourself for not adding the cap/ line stage upgrade.

I feel like I am spinning out of control and money is just flying out of my hands. This place is making me crazy! And to think it all started because my ipod earbuds kept falling out of my ears... Oh well, I guess its another $65.00 to a worthy cause.

That $50 will be long forgotten in a few months. At some point you will hook the hd 300 up as a pre and probably enjoy it for years and years.

For me I just decide what needs improvement in my room and join a forum about it. At first I wanted a new computer because mine was approaching a year old, so i went to overclocking forums and now the computer i had is decked out with the latest gear, I made a second computer thats water cooled with every known upgrade, I custom made an external water cooler and a third case for my next monster. Now that I consider myself done with that, I come to headfi and I've just ordered my third headphone amp, got into tubes, learned to make interconnects and mini cables, and bought the obligatory chrome banana holder. Moral of the story is, if you don't want to spend money, LEAVE AND NEVER LOOK BACK!!!!

In December I purchased the HD580's for $116 from amazon.com, and the klipsch promedia 2.1's for $130 from amazon.com(hot deals - don't ask). In the 3 months that followed, I've:

1. Bought a cha47 amp for $65 and sold for same price
2. Bought a meta42 for $162 and sold for $149
3. Sold HD580's for $120 and bought HD650's for $350
4. Bought an RME Digi96/8 PAD for $299
5. Bought an iPod mini for $242
6. Bought Shure e2c earbuds for $82
7. Bought a headphile CPU Silver 1/4 to RCA cable for $50
8. Bought an Oehlback cable for $63 and sold for $35 to my friend
9. Ordered the HD300 for $439
10. Bought sound actived usb lights from newegg for $9
11. Bought a 1.5 Meter Zu Mobius cable for $224
12. Sold my Klipsch 2.1's for $110 and bought Refurb'ed 4.1's for $125

Talking about spending money, hehe...

no regrets though

From reports the hd 300 will drive the AKG K 1000's. Is anyone going to use the 1000's with this amp?

Nice rundown, kelesh. It's interesting to see such info with prices.

This looks an awesome buy and I'm seriously considering one for my Ety 4s and HD 580's. Only prob is that I don't have any more spare wads of cash littering up the place so I'd have to wait for the second production run... *IF* there is one I really hope enough people order the HD 300 to make it worth Craigs time as this does seem to be a really good option for what I 'think' I would enjoy immensly.

I've never had tubes but always had a nagging feeling I'd really like them a lot and at $400.. ****, I'd be crazy to pass this up. I need to cross my fingers and hope this amp doesn't get dropped through lack of interest. That would just be a tragedy for all involved.

Well, since Craig needs a few more orders to make it worth his while, I'm probably going to order an HD300. Even though I was waiting for the HD25, I figure that I can always sell the HD300 once the HD25s are shipping.

That is, unless the HD300 can be fitted with an impedancer (Craig has hinted at building one). If so, then it may be worth keeping. We shall see.

Pirate, there were only six orders as of yesterday, thats encouraging. If Craig finds headamp sales profitable we will no doubt see many novel products through Eddie Current.

I was one too late...

Yup, I tried to get #007, but came in one order too late. Craig reports that I'm #8.

Can't wait!!
