RobN, I am getting the new black chassis with a neutrik 1/4" jack and the solen stage 1 ugrade on the ppx3. The solen stage 2 requires a bigger chassis than the std mpx3 chassis and I didnt want to go that big. The caps upgrade might change the sound to much so I didnt get that one either. I would have liked to have used this one as a preamp but it has to much gain. The hd300 probably will have to much gain too, but its much cheaper to add the line upgrade, it already has multiple inputs, and I like the idea of an outboard power supply if I use it as a pre. Curiosity is driving this purchase more than anything; I want to hear this amp. I read the claim the hd 300 is better than the ppx3, even if it was one persons opinion, I want to find out. I am thrilled with the ppx3, if the hd 300 is better in my system, then the hd 300 will be one fantastic amp.

Hey Earl,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,You Da MAN!!!

Can't wait to hear your impressions. Especially since I'm considering the ppx3 as my next amp. I will get to hear the ppx3 myself at the NYC meet in May.

I swear,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if I could just sell my girlfriend for a couple grand then I could get that Maestro. I'd be one happy camper.

Which PC's do you use with the ppx3?

The signalcable magic power cord is the one I like. The LAT AC-2 is another good one.

so tube amps are supposed to be turned off when you're not using them, right?

how come there is no power switch on the front of this amp?

yeah I noticed... which is why I asked: "Why is there no power switch on the front of this amp?" :P

This is a big amp, it seems like kind of an odd design choice to have the power switch on the back of it. To maximize the life of the tubes, is it best to turn off the amp whenever you're not using it?

Actually, I like the power switch on the back because it wont get turned on accidentally by my four year old. Its not that much work to reach around to the back is it? It probably prevented a long run of wire by mounting it on the back of the chassis. We dont do things for convenience around here buddy; we want the best sound quality.

You're not going to find too many amps with power switches on the front -- I think somehow the concept of saving lazy people energy wasn't in the original design considerations. And yes, you are generally supposed to turn tube amps off because tubes have a limited lifespan, but the tubes themselves generally need a little time to warm up before listening each time you do turn it on.

I'll be very curious to hear more details on the HD25...still can't decide whether to pull the trigger on the PPX3 or wait for the HD25.
