Frogbeats Custom-IEM Appreciation Thread - Page 4

From personal experience, I can tell you that the UM Miracle is a wonderfully-spacious sounding CIEM
 

However, what I can also tell you, from personal experience, is that the UM Miracle does not sound right when driven directly by the Cowon J3. The J3 just doesn't control them with enough grunt. Add an amp into that equation and things would probably change dramatically for the better, as the UM Miracle sounds lovely with a HiSoundAudio RoCoo BA or DX100 (DX100 does drive them better than the RoCoo BA, but, for the money, the RoCoo still does a nice job with the Miracles and much better with this particular CIEM than the J3).

 

So I'm not trying to dissuade you from buying the UM Miracle at all - I'm simply pointing out that it won't make magic if you drive it directly from a J3, so you need to take that into consideration.

 

If I'm not mistaken, the C4 uses TWFK for tweeter and midrange duties, as does the Miracle, but I'm open to being corrected on that.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I've read similar comments before, but I'm happy to get whatever earphones will deliver the best sound, then listen to them myself to compare J3 vs a "good source". If the J3 alone isn't good enough I'm prepared to go with a nice amp or another player. The bottom line for me though is whether the C4 will be as good as or better than the Miracle. At the moment, money is no object as long as I can get whatever will most likely sound best to me.

 

I'm prepared to pull the trigger on the C4s based on what people are saying. The general impression I get is that these are good neutral top-tiers, which I'm hoping comes as close as I can get to the HD800 sound in portable form. But how long does the 20% deal go on for? If I get them now, how much time do I have to get impressions done and sent off?

^ I think all you have to do is secure the deal first (by talking to Frogbeats's owner David and possibly paying a small non-refundable deposit), and after that you'll get plenty of time to get your ear impressions and send them to him.

 

If you're after the HD800's sound signature, then I'm afraid the SE 5-way would not be for you since afaik it sits on the darker side of the spectrum with an organic rather than analytic characteristic. Quite close to the LCD-2's from people's reports. Also not the easiest one to get if you're outside EU.

Strongly agree with this, the C4 + J3 lacks oomph. The C4 + Sansa Clip has oomph but is lacking in dynamics. Am currently considering a better DAP to pair the C4 with. After a few weeks of having had them, they are still wonderful to my ears.

In that case I assume the C4 likes being amped? Are there any portable amps out there that'll play nice with the J3 and C4?

 

EDIT: I just heard from David that apparently the deal ends today so I'd recommend anyone interested to get in quick!

Have preorder the CEntrance HiFi M8 to pair with my C4. I tried the C4 with JDS C421 (8620) but the synergy was not good enough for my taste because the C421 makes the C4 sound thinner. Still waiting for the M8 to complete my portable rig :)

Once I get my impressions and reshelled monitors back from Dream Earz, I might have to place an order for these C4. Hopefully the sale is still on by then.

Edit: Jk maybe not. Just saw the sale is over. Bummer.

When are you getting them back? And weren't you also looking at the AS2, Heir 8a etc?

Probably around the 9th or 10th if everything goes smoothly. I've ruled out the AS2 because I'll be upgrading my 1.2 to ASG-2 anyway. And I feel like the 8A is too similar to the 7X to justify a purchase. If I get another IEM, I want it to be a clarity monster, and it seems like these C4 might do the trick. Still undecided though. I don't know if I even want to spend the money.

Hmm I do wish they had a similar sale to bring the triples more in line with offerings from mirvana and 1964 ears (low 300s) as they do look damn good
