AKG K167 TIËSTO - Discussion, Impression, Review & Appreciation Thread - Page 90  

So far from what I remember (please don't make me read the whole thread for the fourth time) there are 2 accounts of durability issues.  One from whom claims not to baby his gear, and the other who praises the K167.  Probably worshipped the headphone to death.

On the other hand, one owner claims to have accidentally dropped the headgear, along with regularly throwing it to bed, and found the item still in pristine condition.

Not to be mean or anything but there is very little mention of build quality where you pointed me to, and there is 0 mention of your issue with the headphone about something breaking or cracking, so maybe go back and update the post with that info first? 

I know its your thread, but the key here is to provide UNBIASED reviews and opinions, because if I buy these and they feel in my hands like a $10 toy then you bet I will be back here and ask you why you have not mentioned that. Sound quality is subjective and all, but build quality is something most people will more or less agree with given the same item. 

/raises hand.  I'm the first person to break the K167 - in four days.

I don't like the build quality, specifically the plastic hinge.  My sister broke her K618 in less than a month, which uses the same hinge.  Many people here have said that right out of the box, they hear this snap or creak from the headband.

Thanks for posting, were you even rough on them, did they fall, etc or just snapped and broke?

Do you have a pic of where they broke? 

First this happened that day.

I ignored it, then it broke later that day.

I would say maybe the first week, I take care of my gear so that I don't scratch the paint, but this didn't even last a week.

Its NOT about being a baby, its about updating your original post/page to mention something so important as "my headphones broke within the FIRST week or weeks"!! I mean this is one of the most important aspects of these headphones, so why are you not mentioning them in your post?

"they are broken but since process is pretty fast I wont complain"? the process is not so fast everywhere else, and since we have more than a few people reporting that their headphones, its important you mention it in your first page

2 to 4 people in ONE thread to break their K167 within a week or so, I call that terrible quality anyway you look at it, dont you agree?

Even though I don't find the midrange recessed, I feel that it is "thin". The thickness that you experience with mid-centric phones is lacking and even though the detail is there, the density isn't. I put these away for a few days, and when I broke these out, I was surprised by their "tinny sound". A few hours later, they sounded fine but certain drums and snares sound iffy. Think I may put these up for sale, even though I like them.

Sucks about the hinge issue.  Can anyone confirm that they are in fact updating the design so that this won't be a problem going forward with newer sets, or is this just miow speculating?  I hve had mine for a couple of weeks, but they have only gotten light use so far.  Sound is excellent on the low end--just tight, meaty and accurate bass-- but I agree with other comments on the mids; just a bit absent on some tracks.

I can agree with that.  They are missing that midrange "bloom."    They are still a fun headphone and good performer for the money but not sure if it's my flavor.  They definitely blow my Grado SR225i's away though.

I probably just have to spend more money for what I am looking for.

Of course they are in one thread, thats no surprise, its the main/only k167 thread. Im not taking part in any argument here, please dont get me wrong. I just want to clarify this is a 90 page thread and taking aside any opinions you may deem as biased, there are 1350 posts here, and a staggering amount of them are positive. 4 pairs breaking doesnt shock me at all. Hang around in your most popular local audio store for more than a couple hours on a weekend, and you will likely see all kinds of brands and models of busted phones being returned, not excluding some of the $$$$ models.

I own these, and i like them a lot. I dont think they are the best headphone in the world, but they are among my favorites for what i listen to, and sonically perform above their price bracket. They are plastic, and they fold right up, this can be seen and noted on the manufacturers site. I think they should have made parts of them metal myself, or non folding. Mine still havent come near breaking. To be honest i think four faulty units/mishaps out of what must be hundreds in this thread alone isnt a bad indication that the plastic is not too bad (but could certainly be better). Just my opinion.

I gotta say that I still think the sound is perfect for me, even after a driver transplant.  I would say it's worth taking the driver out and putting them into a better body.  You can find something that is comfortable or durable enough for you.  I wouldn't want a replacement if it's going to break again.

Yeah there are better bass quantity headphones out there, but the details that these have to go along with that bass make me not want to buy anything else, for a while at least :)
