Format to prepare library for a future DAP?

What format do you recommend to build a catalog of music in preparation of a future DAP (type unknown, but leaning toward Creative model)?

I would like the best sound quality and have been using the WMA Lossless for a couple albums but I am unsure how compatible it will be.

Given that quality is number one priority, what should I be using? If format is player specific, please note in your response.

Thank you for the knowledge!

WMA lossless is supported on no current player. All non-MP3 lossy formats (AAC, Ogg, WMA, etc.) are not supported on all players. For lossy your only safe bet is MP3 (if so use LAME encoder). If you want best quality go uncompressed with WAV (supported by nearly all current HD based portables, with the notable exception of the Rio Karma, which supports lossless FLAC instead). Some older players (older gen iPods, etc.) have problems with large uncompressed files and depending on the portable, your battery life can suffer big time.

Unless you know the player you are going to use, MP3 and WAV are your only safe bets.
