Turntables, Styli, and DACs! Oh My!

So, I'm looking into getting a turntable to convert my vinyl collection into lossless audio.

I don't know where to start.

I have a custom computer with an open pci-e x1 (I need a sound card, realtek just doesn't cut it)

I have a decent Hifi system
  • Sony STR-DG520
  • Pioneer CS-G911 (front) x2
  • Sony SS-CN490 (center)
  • Polk R150 (rear) x2

Where do I start and what all do I need?

Why bother?

 

It'll be easier, cheaper, better quality and far, far less time consuming to simply buy all the tracks you want as pre tagged MP3s. or off 2nd hand CDs.

Maybe it's about the journey, not the destination. Plus, lumping MP3's and CDs into a category as "better" than vinyl is complete fallacy and will yield inconsistent results from one master to another. Sure, the A/D equipment will lose some resolution in the process, but that doesn't mean it's an exercise in futility. Just look at how many albums are on HDTracks that started life on vinyl, but they're not telling you that...
