Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I found this thread when trying to decide if converting my FLAC's to OGG Vorbis or MP3 to my portable music player. I did some ABX comparisons with Foobar between FLAC and Vorbis at quality 8 and quality 9 levels and after 5 tries (Level 9) it gave me 85% accuracy in telling them apart (15% chance I was guessing). I was very unhappy with this, as I thought that Vorbis being much newer would be better than MP3. I then compared FLAC to LAME encoded V0 (maximum VBR setting) and I could not tell the difference at all. These tests were done using a high quality DAC (Matrix Mini-ii) and a pair of Sennheiser HD 598's. I'm definitely disappointed in Vorbis' quality, but now I faithfully know what the best codec/encoder to use for putting music on my portable music player.
