All in all, there is a reason why people want to convert FLAC to MP3: the free and open source royalty-free nature of FLAC format lets it well-supported by many software applications. However, compared to MP3, the fly in the ointment is that FLAC still has limitation in portable audio devices and dedicated audio systems. People can't play FLAC files on iTunes, iPhone, iPod, iPad, MP3 Players, Android, BlackBerry and more popular devices and players.

A widely used solution to convert FLAC to MP3 is turn to Faasoft FLAC to MP3 Converter. Hope it is what you are looking for.

Actually, all but Apple play FLAC unless quite old and even Apple units that use apps can do it. Reason to convert is size. Faasoft is also not free. If I'm paying, I'm getting DBpoweramp.

I've been using MediaHuman and it's worked really well for me. Simple drag-and-drop function with pretty much all formats supported. It's free.

I do not wish to keep Flac and Mp3 copies on Disk. I can use Flac via MusicBee via PC etc, but lets say I want small MP3s on iOS or other devices e.g. Automotive/ Portables

In such scenarios mp3's take less space and are more universally playable.

So, an on the fly converter that does this fast & free / inexpensive would be great.

Can't believe nobody mentioned FFmpeg. A damn big pile of software out there uses that lib to play/encode/decode. It's free and you can take it pre-compiled for many platforms. It has command line interface too (CLI).

All: https://ffmpeg.org/download.html

Windows: https://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/

Linux: http://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/

Or if you don't/can't use CLI use anything based around FFmpeg like VLC for example.
