Different Volumes from similar kbps MP3

I got an album ripped for 320 kbps and sounds fine like many of my rips. But I have on album that was ripped with only 276 kbps and this one has a noticeable volume drop maybe 40-50%. This only occurs with this album because all of my other rips with lower (e.g. 192 kbps) bit rate has the same volume level as my 320 kbps rips. Anybody know why this occurred?

 

BTW the lower volume album is not that old, produced in 2010.

How's the volume on the album itself if you use the CD?

 

Normally bit rate should not determine the volume.

I suspected the same thing but it wasn't my rip so I can't check, its funny cuz its the only album that I have to remember to turn up the volume for, its dynamics are fine for sure

 

I can't figure out the source of the problem

There *is* no problem.

CDs have a pretty huge dynamic range (difference between the softest and loudest sounds), of about 96dB. 

Good recordings will have a dynamic range of abount 15-20dB atleast, because then you can feel soft and loud sounds well. Its a part of any musical performance. 

This means you'll have to turn up the volume a bit.

 

Modern music is ruined by the plague of low dynamic range. All sounds are loud. You don't need to turn the volume up as much, but it destroys the organic nature of music. It can work well for electronic music, but for recorded music its not good.

 

So I guess this album has a higher dynamic range, thats all.

The solution is to use Sound Check in iTunes. It'll balance out the volume between albums. It's a bit primitive. There are plugins that are better at it. I use iVolume.
