got my iPod 4th Gen 20gb yesterday in the package.

usually, i really hate Gamestop. but i am intrigued with their trade/sell iDevice program.

and they're are actually offering them in pretty good prices.

personally i really like the old iPods, They're among the only Apple devices that dont have to get outdated with all the releases they keep doing

(ahem... the iPod Touches..)

I don't know what price you paid, the Gamestop at my place is selling the ipod 5g/30GB for $89.90. I could get one off Craiglist for less than half that price. In fact I got one 5.5g/30GB a few months back for $30.

i paid about 44$ since it was a Scratch n Scuff, plus the option for 2-day shipping. it was a aprox. total of about 54.80$

thats actually a good price the the 4th gen model considering offered with nice packaging and accessories.

i still wouldnt trade my beloved iPod 5.5gen to them anyway, after toying around with their walk-in store tradein value price quotes.

They were too low for my comfort... id be willing to risk about 10-20$ profit if i really wanted to. but no!

Never owned a 4g but I would guess both the 4g/20gb and the 5g/30gb should sound about the same. The thing I love the 5g/5.5g is you can easily upgrade the drive (hdd up to 240gb or ssd up to 128gb to my knowledge) & battery, rockbox it in a minute, not mentioning the great sounding to my great ears. :)

i plan on upgrading to SSD once the HDD of my 5.5gen video gets shot, but that wont happen in awhile.

but the 4gen is a pretty good PMP. but i have mainly for nostalgia. but they both sound pretty much similar being that they both share Wolfson Audio Chip/Dac's which sounds superior to the Cirrus Logic chips in the 6th/7th gen and iTouches/iPhones IMO.

Well others may disagree on the superiority of the wolfson but personally I become addicted to the rockboxed 5g sounding. I don't want to know why or if there is anything to do with the wolf - all I care about is the sounding. Although I never owned any 6th or 7th classic, I did extensively audition on the 7th in an Apple store on multiple occasions using my own IEM's. The 7th classic just can't match the sound from the 5g which I enjoy so much. Plus I hate the color and the looks of the later classic's - they simply look ugly and boring. To me the only advantage is the 160gb, but that advantage is gone once you throw in a 240gb HDD into the 5.5g. Did I mention rockboxing the 5g/5.5g is like a charm while rockboxing the 6th/7th is like pain in the ...?

i found sound to be pretty different between my iTouch 2nd gen between my iPod Classic 5.5gen and iPod Classic 4th gen

my iClassics had more depth in sound compared to my iTouch.

but its all a love/hate situation, just slight differences in sound but most would ignore it.

its all self preference really

never tried to Rockbox at all, but my friend did. he likes it but he just hates the UI look and design..

but im fine with stock, and Apples horrible EQ setups that i never use.

I strongly recommend you try rockboxing the 5.5g and play the FLAC's to hear the difference. To me it made a huge difference in comparison to playing mp3's on the OF. That difference caught me by total surprise. Just give it a try and you have nothing to lose. You can always go back to use the iTunes (which really sucks big time) if the RB doesn't impress you. Personally I would rather have no ipod than use the iTunes. That just shows how much I dislike it. :)

Agreed. At least try it. I love it on my 160g...

There is no "iPod classic 4th or 5th Gen". The "classic" line began with the 6th generation of iPod, when the design changed.

As for specific differences in sq, it is what it is. Preferring a wolfson over a cirrus just means that's what you like - it doesn't make the wolfson the better sounding/performing chip.

And Rockboxing a classic (6th Gen and up) truly will bring out the sq it's capable of.

It certainly does. I wouldn't go back to stock. The EQ settings alone are worth it...
