Which of the following headphones complement my DT990 best?

I've been having my DT990 Premium (250ohms) for a while and loved it a lot. Now that I have a bit extra cash ($200-300), I'm about to invest in my next headphones. I'm not not looking for an upgrade but a pair of cans that complement my DT990 and brings some new listening experience. Here's a list of headphones I've always been interested to try out:

HD598

AD700/900 (maybe the latest version?)

Grado 225/325

Shure 840/940

My set-up is laptop+Fiio E17 and I'm not planning to get expensive DAC or amp any time soon.

I listen to all types of genres but mostly vocal: Rock, Jazz, Pop, Country etc. you name it.

So which one of those fits my criteria best?

Appreciate any input that may help

Oh I also heard a lot of good things about Sony MDR-1R so might add it to my list as well

Ive had the Dt990s for two years now. I also have had a pair of Senn HD595s which are slightly lesser than the HD598s. I think youll be a bit disappointed going to 598s from DT990s. I just got a pair of K550 recently and WOW. These things are so good. If they seal well on your head the bass is just so quality. Less quick than the DTs, but just as quality. The lows on the K550s also have a smooth effortless depth thats hard to explain. Im a bass head who listens to nothing but tech house, psytrance, and dnb just so you know.

Hey man thanks for your reply. I might try K550 someday,What do you think about the rest of the cans I listed?

I cant really comment on Grado's or Shure's. I've never been interested in them and haven't heard them. I already commented on the HD598's above. As for the AD700/900's, they have a clear flat sound but absolutely no bass, so since you like your 990s these will sound pretty thin and lifeless in comparison. You may also want to look into the Audio Technica A900X. There have been a lot of good feedback on these guys for their quality sound and fun signature. A lot of people have recommended them on par with the K550s.

I still think that the K550s complement the 990's best. The overall package is the best in the $300 range IMO. They're closed cans that isolate well with a sound stage nearly as wide as the 990s. The K550s actually have slightly better imaging and instrument positioning than the open 990s or my HD595s which is one of their best qualities. Good luck.

200-300 dollar budget? Get yourself a nice full-size amp or DAC! Sorry, I don't follow rules that well here biggrin.gif That's the best option I see here

Lol that's all right. But I think a nice pair of desktop DAC+amp cost well more than $300

Well, you have a good enough DAC for now. Something along the lines of a Hifiman EF2A, Matrix M-Stage, Little Dot MKii and others.

You mean E17 is good enough? But it's a DAC+amp combo; connecting it to another amp is like double ampped?

It should sound better than your computer's soundcard at least! Just use it as a DAC essentially either with USB or the little dock they sell, I forgot what it's called.

Sorry, can't comment on that myself. But I will be getting them soon. People say they are extremely comfortable though. Also, sound as good as Audeze LCD2's.
