Hey there.  I don't usually post here much.  Anyways I am an amateur producer and once again looking for more headphones.  I do still however produce on my monitors which is the preferred way but I still like to have some decent headphones without spending a lot.  As of right now I use Beyerdynamic DT 880 pros, KRK KNS 8400 for producing.  Also use my grados sr 60 sometimes just for fun listening.  Recently purchased some k240s which I for the most part disliked.  Too much midbass bloat and muddy, not enough detail or treble extension, but pretty good mids and I actually liked the soundstage more than the 880's in a way.  Ended up returning them.  However it made me wanna buy the higher end akg so here I am.

Question is im looking at the hd 598 and the q701.  My friend has the k701's which to me lacked low end had pretty detailed mids(probably a hump somewhere) and somewhat aggressive treble although the biggest difference was the soundstage my god it is wide.  It sounds good that way but maybe not totally realistic.  I did some research on the q701 and it pretty much seems like a k701/702 with more bottom end, some say more realistic soundstage and smoother and less aggressive treble.  I dont know as much about the HD 598 but they get rave reviews like everywhere.  At the moment I think im going for the q701's mostly cause its sound signature is probably closer to my 880's( a bit sibilant but I seem to like that sometimes).  The Sennheisers are probably quite dark in comparison from what I hear and looking at graphs.  From what I read it also seems the soundstage on both q701 and hd 598 are better than the dt880.  My DT 880 did sound a little foward and could use more depth(kns 8400 sounded even more foward but would be great for recording).  The DT 440's I had actaully to me had a much more open soundstage and smoother and less sibilant treble(very airy) and also more mids than the 880( 880's mids are ever so slightly recessed).  The 880 is however more detailed and it has better sounding bass but the 440's had more bass.  I forgot to mention I use my headphones with an audio interface.  A Scarlett 2I2(doesnt have much power though as its usb powered).  I will not be buying another interface soon fyi.  But if someone wants to recommend me a standalone headphone amp for casual listening that is decent and not expensive then thrown em at me (that would be nice actually haha).

So back to the question.  Q701 or HD 598.  The soundstage on both of these compared to the 880 sounds welcome from what I hear.  Oh, I also heard my brothers HD 650 which to me seemed very neutral and not fatiguing whatsoever.  There wasnt much to fault for it and had a very good depth and was very realistic but I was however missing my usual craving for slightly aggressive treble haha.  Thats out of my budget though so dont mention that or the HD 600.

Oh and also you can mention other suggestions in the price range of $200-350.  But at the moment I have my eye on the q701's as I think it would suit my tastes more.

Sorry one more thing.  Im also in the search of a fun casual headphone for under 200 that I will get another time.  Any suggestions?  As a beyer fan maybe dt990's? another pair of grados?

The DT880 is a fantastic open headphone for producing, there is really no need for anything else.
Similarly, the KNS8400 is a great closed can for producing. You don't need any more for producing, so be honest, you're simply looking to spend money on more unnecessary headphones smily_headphones1.gif

True, I love my 880's for producing.  But it would be nice to expand my headphone collection =)

How about the HD-600?

I'd probably take the Q701 for producing/monitoring. It's flatter sounding and has more air and better instrument separation than the HD 598. Less grain as well.

For everyday listening, I'd rather have something with a bit more warmth and aggression and would take the Grado SR225 or Alessando MS2 if we're sticking to headphones in the $200-$300 price range. The SR325 has a bit too much treble for my tastes, but could be right for you.

Ok thanks everyone who replied.  I ordered the q701's from amazon for about 260 and should be here tom (yay amazon prime).  I will probably post my initial reactions.

Heya,

$200

You might want to consider an amplifier (output from your scarlet to an external amplifier). Maybe that's why you're not getting the most from your DT880's for example.

Very best,
