I've had both and used them for rock and metal both are top tier IEM's. Personally I enjoyed the 232 more for punchier bass and sparkly detailed highs which I think can't be matched by the 4r. The 4r is probably a little more neutral with a little more clarity. Soundstage is pretty close between the two. You can't go wrong with either but if I had to pick again the 232 no contest.

Oh and earphonesolutions.com had a coupon code for 25% off the 4r and 232. It might have ended yesterday though frown.gif

hey

I have used the Klipsch X10i's and to tell you the truth, I prefer the sound signature of the X10i's rather than the Westone 4R, or the PFE232, and I have used the Westone 4R for roughly 6 months, people who love analytical sound would prefer the Westone 4R, I dont see a substantial update accordingly to the sound towards the PFE232 or the Westone 4R, but to my ears the instrument seperation and soundstage was much better on the Westone 4R. I love my X10i's and I can tell you that they are very fun to listen to. Its like a perfection of everthing.

I agree with you. I have liked my W4 for about 4 months. I then upgraded to custom IEMs like the ES5 and JH13, and I also got togo 334 later on. But to be honest, my recently bought X10 (which is 1/10 the price of 334), did pretty well and I enjoy them even more musically, and I really like the punchy and warm bass of these although they don't go as deep and reveal textures as well.

I also owned the X10 a long time ago and while they were technically quite behind W4 and PFE232 with quite few apparent flaws in the bass and treble, they overall presentation was very mesmerizing and enjoyable. I often caught myself being lost in the music,  stopping whatever I was doing without even realising. biggrin.gif

thanks, so how do the 232`s and westone 4`s compare in size and comfort, will be the deciding factor, leaning towards the phonaks due to the earphonesolutions deal

They're both comfortable but not to sound like phonak fanboy but the 232 is more comfortable. They're tiny and disappear while in your ear. The 4r is very comfortable too but the housing is a bit bigger.

A lot of useful information has been brought up already and I can't think of much to contribute. The way I see it is the PFE232 is more aggressive and fun sounding while the W4 is more serious and a bit laid back. The PFE232 has the best Bass I've heard from a BA to date and the Treble is REALLY spot on (I use the Grey filters only). Lower mids is a bit toned down and that can make male vocals sound a bit bland IMO, but the lower treble/upper mids are VERY good so usually female vocals sound really good. W4 seems to have a more linear response and seems to do everything pretty well. Think of it as this, PFE232 has superior Bass and Treble IMO, while the W4 does nothing incorrectly. A few things to note on both IEMs is, the regular W4 doesn't have replaceable cables, PFE232 cable is a bit on the short side from experience, PFE232 doesn't isolate as well as the W4, and as everyone complains, the PFE232 is a bit steep in the price range. Those are the few flaws I see in both IEMs. I really love my pair and I certainly can say it's one of the greatest sounding Universal IEMs I've tried/owned to date. I chose the PFE232 over the AKG K3003i as I found the AKG to sound too relaxed and I was looking for more of a "fun" factor. And I can list many things wrong about the AKG so it was certainly not for me. I wish I could have tried both the PFE232 and W4 side by side, but I'm only giving information based on individual experiences.

The both IEMs are great buy PFE232 soundshape change with filters, so IMO it's better buy. others IEMs like UE900, Sony EX1000, GR07 and if you want close enough sound signature to X10 then JVC FX700 are good upgrade. BTW with little extra you can buy used highend CIEMs here and reshell them they will huge upgrade over X10.

Pretty much all of this. I have to stress though, that the W4s are not "flat" or "neutral" in the grand scheme of things, only relative to something like the PFE232. There is a mid-bass bump, and it isn't all that subtle (tip-rolling will sort of remedy this). It also adds to the warm - the W4s have this warmth through the lower-mids (upper mids are slightly more recessed) that glosses over some details and clarity compared to the PFE232, which are very clear. Not to beat down on the W4s, though, they do sound fantastic and are completely on par with the Phonaks. Mids are just that much more lush, and the presentation is so enveloping. Imaging and stage size is a bit better IMO on the W4. If I was to hold them against full-sized headphones, the W4s would be the HD650 and the PFE232 would be a HE-400, but with more upper-mids/lower treble.

Build wise, the PFE232s are built better and feel more solid, I feel no shame in admitting this. But the Westones stomp on them in terms of ergonomics, isolation, and comfort.

Oh, and earphonesolution always has a Black Friday coupon, it's usually the best sale of the year. Since there was already a 25% off coupon, the Black Friday one might have something even lower! Got my W4s there, and service/shipping was fantastic! Got them in 2 days flat.

Just made the plunge.  Man I hope I like these.  :-P  Wish me luck.  If not at least my wallet won't take up as much space in my pocket. ;)
