AKG "K267 TIËSTO" - Discussion, Impressions & Review Thread - Page 72

Has anyone opened up a set of K267s to see what the drivers and other internals look like? I was comparing Innerfidelity graphs of the K267 and K550 and they have a lot of similarities. I'm wondering if I can get my 550s sounding more like the 267s.

Haven't opened mine up but they do have a similar sound, the k267 has more bass and the k550 sounds a bit brighter to my ears. I imagine if you were able to add some kind of bass port to the k550s they'd sound even more alike.

Very likely this. Adding bass ports doesn't just make bass stronger but it also tames the brightness slightly bit. Of all the semi-closed designs I've had, all of them resulted in same if plugging the ports, a brighter less bassy sound. The ports also make it warmer sounding as a whole a bit.

From memory I would say the drivers look very much the same. Hard to get a good look at it on the K267, the foam is glued on. K267 is warmer but overall has some snappy treble rawness to it. I don't think it is thick sounding but more so than K550 or even ATH-M50x

I remembered seeing a similar discussion some time ago but only recently made the back to back comparisons. I agree the 550 has less low bass and seems like it has more treble. Overlaying the graphs you can see that the increased energy is mostly in the very high frequency range. The 267 has more energy in the upper midrange. I think that fits with the way I hear them. What is really interesting is that there are some very similar little peaks and valleys through the FR curve. I'm thinking the drivers are probably identical and most of the differences in sound come from the other physical characteristics of the housings and materials.
