The Kardashians - I just don't get it ....

OK, I'm an old coot, but I watch an inordinate amount of TV and I'm not unaware of the various reality shows - we get bombarded with most of the American series down here in Oz because they are cheaper to buy than actual drama featuring people who can act.

That said, the entire cast of Jersey Shore could fly down here and I doubt that there would be anyone at the airport beyond a few bored photographers. Momma Kardashian flew in yesterday with one of the Jenner kids - Casey, I think - and they were swamped with kids looking for autographs. WTF ? I even went to the trouble of pulling up the Wikipedia entry on the most famous of the brood:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Kardashian

A sex tape and some modelling. Reads like the resume of half the waitresses in LA - big deal. But then momma got them a reality show and the rest is history.

My cynicism aside, can someone from Gen Y please enlighten me. At this point, I just cant see why anyone would pay this family simply for being 'famous' - even Ozzy had an actual career before the cameras arrived at his front door. ;)

The vast majority of people appear to be stupid and/or have bad taste? I wish it weren't true, but life evidences the contrary. (Mine at least) Hey kids! Work hard, develop a skill or get a degree, and you'll be successful! Or be a vapid man/woman whore and make more in a year than doctors and lawyers do in a decade.  Bland music, movies, literature, characters- feed the mind of idiots, the true secret to power since the beginning of time. And the Kardashian's is no Flava of Love, am I right?

I find a lot of reality shows to be the equivalent of freak shows.

And going by history, freaks do tend to be well paid, and famous.  The only difference though, is that in the past you would most likely be born as one. Nowadays you can choose to become one.

The thing to note, though, is that freaks always remain that, and the TV is full of them. Thats the sad reality.

Real content takes mind, money and skill. This doesn't.

Fair enough - seems I'm not alone in shaking my head everytime this circus comes on the box. Makes The Spice Girls and some of the other manufactured pop acts look like serious talent by comparison - at least they had to put a microphone to their lips and attempt to sing (at worst, dance whilst miming the words). The Kardashians can't sing, dance or act - that's a new kind of 'triple threat', I guess.

I also feel this feeds our inert desire for voyeurism in some way. We need to see other people doing stuff we would never do in order to boost our own sense of self worth.

A lot of them is freak shows. We also have talent shows which only feed on the freak show aspect on the audition fase. Then we have these kind of zeniq reality shows where they repeat the same thing over and over. Ice Road Truckers, those crab fishing guys etc that is neither freak, talent.

I do suspect the reality genre is on a decline by now. We been fed with it for so many years now the number of seen that been there don´t need it anymore is filled.

I dont see it disappearing when its so much cheaper to produce and  the producers can treat the 'talent' pretty much anyway they like. Its also a feeder conduit for the 'star makers', an industry unto itself - the people who gave us The Spice Girls, Indecent Obsession and others. The Koreans don't kid themselves that it's anything other than an industry - would-be K-POP stars are drafted into schools where they learn their trade - but anyone who wants to make a living on stage needs to be able to sing and dance. The Kardashians appear to have no talent beyond being able to smile for the Papparazzi - weird.

It will disappear when nobody watch the shows simple as that. Then they will have to focus on more quality instead. However it will take a while for them to learn the lesson :D

It's only a matter of time - I knew we were doomed when they started broadcasting the Cajun folk shooting crocs. They even use subtitles for the non-Cajun hunters now - it's insulting to both the hunters and the audience, IMO. Doubly so when you read that the 'altercations' on Hardcore Pawn and Operation Repo are ALL scripted. Pathetic.

I doubt thats going to happen.

Until we all have something else to spend our time on, its hard to see why there'll be a lack of an audience.
