Just wanted to pop in and say thank you David!!! Thanks to this review my headphone journey began after much searching on the web. I got the HD600, that was 6 months ago now. You've helped guide me toward the HE400 and HE500 as well. Just thought I might as well sign up and thank you after all that you've helped me with :)

Hi, David

Your favourite amps for Audeze LCD3 are discontinued.

Have you listened any new great amplifier (maybe Cavalli liquid gold or Malvalve) for the LCD3´s?

All best

Nice collection!

Just saw the T1 going for $899. Probably high time to give it more of an A+ range :D

Also, the TH900 is going for 1400+ so probably that bumps it up to the B+ range.

Thank you!

While I'm penny pinching for $250 headphones, you have this collection over here...

I saw that and ordered some T1's. Just want to see how they stack up to my other stuff (HD650 et al) I hope they are as good as a lot of people say they are.

I had my time with the TH900 and I kind of understand David's (relative) lack of enthusiasm for them. I thought, bass-wise, they were beaten pretty soundly by just about any planar (including the Mad Dog, which is about 1/5 the price) and I just kind of got bored/tired of them. It was kind of like a mainstream headphone with an ultra fast decay. Plus, for a closed back, the isolation is pretty lousy.

IMO, a fair price for it is probably closer to the $800-$1000 range.

That's the whole point of them, we don't always want a high end kinda sound, some music (rap, pop, electronic) works very well with the TH-900 bass and theres not many products in the market that can get it right, good fun mainstream sound, but with transparency, transients, and detail that only an audiophile headphone can deliver. I really wish there where more headphones like the TH-900 out there. I think its worth every penny and definitely belongs up there with the best.

Otherwise we'd have to suffer by having a pair of beats or bose for whenever we want that fun subwoofer kinda bass.

The idea sounded good on paper, I just prefer the presentation of the Mad Dogs. I actually tended to get listening fatigue from the TH900.

I tried the TH900 for only a few minutes and I was shocked how little I liked them. The mids were ridiculously recessed and the bass was just over powering. It's almost like there's a veil to it.

That said, the experience was only for a short period of time, the dac/amp was an island(which may not be high end enough), and I never really liked the D7000, so take my comments with a large cup of salt.

I tried the mad dogs, again, for only a few minutes, and absolutely loved them. A really fantastic value.

^. That's interesting. IME, when I went from the planars to the 900, I thought the veil was lifted. Yes, the mid range could be a little more forward. Overall it is a fun HP and I have listened to it for 3-4 hours continuously. Guess we all hear differently.

I sold my audeze xc's for the th900 with no regrets....I love them.I agree, for modern popular music they are the current king....and could only ever be described as high end.

I would say that would depend on your front end (amp/dac). Out of my iPad Air, I can see why, but when properly powered, I'd take the orthos (LCD-XC). On my BDA-2/GS-X Mk2, I'd take the LCD-XC. YMMV of course.
