Well, my HPs are made in China and so is my DAC. Am I screwed then? biggrin.gif

Fair game :) Yeah I just recently got some K701's (same sound as the Q701's apprarently). I think they are warmer than the 702's that I used to own. Anyways they've turned out to be a great compliment to my LCD2's. Wanted something more polarizing and the K701's are definately that!

Cheers

Nice, someone else to backup the newer K 701 sounding like the Q 701. I own a newer K 701 owner too. :)

I'm kind of curious about this: of the 3 big "original" audiophile headphones (AKG K 701, Beyerdynamic DT 880, Sennheiser HD 650), which one is your guys' favourite?

I've never actually tried the DT 880 so I can't say anything about it. I've tried the HD 650 numerous times at local Head-Fi meets and although they sound good, their warm, smooth, laid-back sound signature always leaves me wanting something more.

Please re-read his comments. He mentioned that the "apparently" have the same sound, BUT he thinks they are warmer than the 702s that he used to own. I happen to agree with LugBug1 here (and coincidentally so do the measurements);

Between the previous big three, I preferred the HD650s, then the K701s and and finally the DT880/600 (I used to own all three FWIW at the same time several years back).

Must stress I really didn't know there was a 'newer' K701 when I got them last friday. I posted my first impressions on the K702 annie thread about how surprised I was on how warm they sounded, as this was not what I was expecting. I've since read that there may have been an update to the K701's following the release of the Q's. Also there are a few peeps on the K701 thread who have tried both and seem to think that the older '7 bump version' has a wider soundstage and is brighter/thinner sounding. That would sound like my K702's to be honest. Either way, its not night and day from my memory. It's just a little more hi-fi friendliness that they must have added haha They are still the same brilliant transparent hp they have always been.

My pick of the older flags;

650/K701 (joint top) I had the 650 for 6 years, and have bought the AKG's twice.

DT880 a truly great headphone just not exactly what I wanted at the time. Plus it's probably the only headphone that I've equalized.

I had the newer 8 bump K701's and i definitely thought they where slightly warm and not bright or thin like people described the older k701.

I never had the 880 just the 990, but the hd 650 is slightly better than these 3.

Here you go (again, just my 2 cents):

1.) SR-009

2.) SR-009

3.) LCD-3

4.) HD800

5.) TH-900

6.) LCD-2 = HE-6

7.) T1

8.) HE-500

9.) W3000ANV

10.) Ed. 8LE

My original rankings had to do with current "flagships" only. But both the HE-500 and LCD-2s are fantastic headphones and upon second thought are more than suitable to be on this list.

Wow, the top 2 choices must be difficult to choose between. wink.gif

David, after reading about your WooAudio WA5/HE-6 pairing being sublime, and how complex and demanding passages of orchestral works can be on amps paired with the HE-6 in another thread, can the Woo handle these demands?

Is the WA5/HE-6 pairing simply polite..."Pleased to meet you" up until the aforementioned passages? Or does it play with authority like..."Come here!" throughout?
