the good ol' headroom amp had amazingly low distortion.

Most probably the other amps are just not neutral, putting emphasis on or lowering certain frequencies in order to achieve something... It's like if you increase the bass, your perception of treble is going to change even though the treble frequencies themselves remain unchanged. Or if you have too much treble, you could think mids are not full enough - however, if you try to lower the treble with EQing, you are going to hear the mids differently, they will be more evident. Even small changes due to imperfect or just different design could influence your view on the sound, so those examples above are just a fragment of possible nuances.

Not rich,  I just choose to spend my $$ on this instead of vacations, watches, new cars, etc., and my wife is pretty frugal too.

Wow, just read this review. Good lord what an unreal amount of money, time, and effort put forth. 

 

First off thanks, seriously. You've officially made it easy for me to shop for my next headphones. Which are probably gunna be either the dt880s, he-500s, or senn 600s. This was an amazingly well put together review, and I would also like to say the level at which you were able to evaluate each of these is incredible, especially considering its from what I can see is completely true.(Im basing this off what I know, and I dont know the sound of many of the flagship models) 

 

This definitely needs to be stickied as one of the most important reviews/threads of all of head-fi. I think really youve completely narrow down all my headphone purchases, and now all I gotta do is find a similar review for amps.

As the others have said, this is an amazing work! Not just for the scope and scale, but how you maintained an objective view throughout over such a long period. For the cans I've owned your opinions ring very true.

This will be the primary reference for headphones on the Internet for a very long time I suspect - and one of the best reasons for those getting into this wallet debilitating hobby to come to head-fi.

Being the owner of only one single full-size headphone (Alessandro MS-1i) I am definitely impressed with the scope of the reviews.  I just wish I could hear some of those headphones ... maybe a trip to your studio in NYC!

:) i think it has the most to offer simply because its been around longest and has evolved the most.  But much of the 20th and 21st greatest and most artistic music would not be classified under today's definition of "classical music"..... to me, bands like Genesis, Radiohead, The Beatles, and artists like Chick Corea, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk...... that's classical music in the 20th/21st Century to me.... or I should say, of a similar artistic value as traditional classical music. :D

Well you'll find both types of classical maniacs.  The great classical composers (there aren't too many GREAT ones) were/are very special and for what they did/do they deserve the exceptional accolades they receive.  I think its really interesting though to hear great elements of music merged with modern-day "fads."  I believe that the principle things which make music "great" to a culture don't change, but it is the fads of the time which find new ways to make use of it.  A great composer/musician should be able to understand (even if just inherently understand) great classic musical ideas, and also the fads of their time and be able to make a unique statement by merging the two, and then sometimes adding something entirely new.  :)
