The industry is actually really excellent right now because the OOP flagships were extremely shortlived models, short-lived products meant to impress and really showcase the company. But they were always difficult to obtain and even more difficult to afford. Most great headphones today cost a lot less and have been in production for much longer.
The ATH-M50 is like a wonderful headphone actually. I've used it in the studio when its available. It's not my absolute favorite studio choice, but its a good one. It wouldn't fair very high on this list, not because it's bad, but its just a different type of headphone, but at the same time, headphones like the KAM HP1 or the Ultrasone HFI-700 are not necessarily on a totally different level.
However, in the sense that Audio Technica has seemingly innumerable choices that they offer at a higher price point, the M50 is sorta like a Toyota Camry in a list where Audio Technica has many Lamborghini models to offer.

I still have an AT that my father actually used in his youth, the build quality is just amazing for the money indeed.

+1. It's prohibitive for David to review just about every headphone there is and that's just fine.
Then that truly would be what I call progress.
I think your concerns are misplaced.

Yeah, why not get HD800 or LCD-3 / HE-6 only...
Loaner pair from Burson. I'm auditioning them with the Soloist SL and LCD-3.
That is a combination I'd be interested in reading about. Plus perhaps other amps....
