is it about the HD650 piggy bagging (or piggy backing? not sure) the HD800? (wearing the HD650 over the HD800)

*checks head-fi for 15 minutes* hmm can't find anything. well it is an expensive thing to do, since you do need 2 of sennheiser's most expensive headphones (before the HD700 released) and a good amp to drive them both

Hello,

 

I have a SR507, but it lacks a wide soundstage, more thick sound and more extended bass.

 

HD800  or Sr007Mk1 could satisfy me ?

I often like using the air conditioner when I listen to music, especially in the summer haha. And, listening with an open back headphone and air conditioner in the same room is not an ideal experience. So the TH900 is my preferred choice on those days, despite my preference of open back headphones usually. "

David it was Australian dollars TH 900 can be had for around $1500 new here. And I purchased new h/p.

The Fostex TH900 is an A+ in my book. It's better off with a warm-side-of-neutral amp, although it's not a needs-tubes phone for bloom or glare-reduction.

It's very revealing in the upper mids, so if there is a lot of glare in the recording or eqp't chain, I will hear it but it's *mostly* nicely finessed.

 

Even on a single CD, as I go from track to track I will hear a little close-miked or over-the-top vocal on one particular track, but then

glorious intimacy and detail, Stax-like, on the others. And they calm down with break-in and also sound more refined after playing for a half-hour or so.

And I don't want to overemphasize this very much, as it's pretty rare not anywhere near like the problem it is with many other phones. There is thankfully little-to-no fatigue with the Fostexes.

Trust me, I know what fatigue and piercing highs are like, and they are a show stopper for me.

 

And when things fall into place, which takes a little work (like with all audiophile things), I can listen to CD after CD and feel things really can't get better than this.

 

They excel in all areas roughly equally, so I don't say, for instance, sound staging is great but bass is off or highs are painful or the opposite.

 

They give

(1)believable, natural, unforced layering and soundstaging  on a macro and micro level (recording-space ambience and image separation) but not gimmicked home-theater sounding;

(2) well fleshed out texture of vocals and instruments but not hyper details that can be distracting;

(3)controlled warm bass (but not overblown, and the bass improves markedly after break in of, say, a few months);

(4)highs that walk the line between silky and soaring (and these also improve with break-in).

 

They are really nice with orchestral music (a full, hall-like sound)  and good singers, including pop and rock singers, digging deep into the character of the voice.

 

With SACDs or the better specially mastered 44.1 discs, the sound is really over-the-top great, where the audio-nervosa critical listening stops completely for me and I just let the music sink in.

 

I keep comparing them in my mind to the R10s I used to own, and the R10s had unbelievable realism but it was often a feeling that the individual musical components were singled out, with too-clear boundaries, so the overall gestalt was missing. Like the whole was less than the sum of the parts. The layering was almost too pronounced, and a touch of blending would have been nice,

as that seems closer to what I recall from live performances with good acoustics. 

So, overall, I prefer the TH900s, as they come very close to the R10s (as I remember) for the true texture and shape of each musical object, but are better getting the interactions and atmosphere right. I would never exchange my TH900s for R10s.

I recently bit on a SRH1840 on the FS/FT forum. Now reading the review here, I'm surprised that it lacks detail. I really like a lot of detail in my headphones, and it seems like a bummer that it has less detail than, say the K701, which I'm supposed to be upgrading from.

Considering the amp you already have, I think you'll probably get closer to what your looking for with the SR007, but it may be a tad too dark.  If you are willing to look into a warm tube amp for the HD800, I say take that route:)

Sure! That's a good price.  It's definitely a good headphone, great in fact considering its closed back nature.

You really like those TH900, admit it!  ADMIT IT they're your favorite!! :) In honor of this post, I will do an hour listening session with the TH900 right now:)

I think it is an upgrade.  It's a better headphone overall I think.  I think its actually a wise choice, if you like the K701 and are looking for something a little more refined but for the same type of music for which the K701 excels, you made a great choice (I think).  It doesn't surpass it in every area, but its overall signature is more natural to me.

I have a SR007t amp, it didn't seem the best to go with SR007. So either I go with SR007Mk2.5 (seems to be more brigther) with 717 amp or better KGSS amp. Either I go with HD800 and DNA Sonett, Stratus or EC Zana Deux amp.

either would be good, but I tend to personally prefer the sound of the HD800 over the SR007 Mk2.5.  This is not a unanimous opinion.  Neither headphone sounds like the SR507, so you won't be wasting your $ either way.  If you listen to classical primarily, go with the HD800 I say:)  Otherwise, the SR007 Mk2 may be your best bet. It's a bit more transparent, I just find the tonal balance to be a bit harder to get along with, but as you can see, many find the HD800 to be too bright for their preferences.

I would like to include more Ultrasones eventually.  I've owned several in the past that I no longer have.  I've read a lot of good things on head-fi regarding the Signature Pro.  I would definitely, like to include that.  I think if this review were to reach anywhere over 65-70 units, I'd have to start borrowing for sure!  But I'd love to see it grow into something even bigger some day.
